Types of Education
- There are presently three types of education: Formal, Informal and Non-formal. We will discuss these three types of education in this post.
1. Formal Education
- It takes place mainly in the school or college premise.
- In this, a person learns basic, academic or trade skills.
- Formal education begins in elementary school. You must have seen small children attending nursery or kindergarten but that is not part of formal education.
- Formal education begins from elementary school and continues to secondary school.
- Specially qualified teachers give formal education.

Characteristics of formal education
- Its structure is hierarchical.
- It is planned.
- Fees is paid regularly.
- It has grading system.
- It is subject-oriented and has syllabus.
- The syllabus also has to be covered within a specific time period.
Advantages of Formal education
- It is organized and up to date.
- Trained professional teacher teach.
- The learning process is structured and systematic.
- Regular evaluation is done to ensure student is learning.
Disadvantages of Formal education:
- Brillant students get bored due to the long academic year which they have to follow to move to the next stage.
- Both good and bad students sit together so chances on good students adopting bad habits are high.
- Some students because of being lazy does not learn in spite of being motivated by teacher.
- It is rigid and costly as compared to other forms of learning.
2. Informal Education
- In this, parents teachers to ride a bicycle or preparing a meal.
- By reading books from library or by reading educational website one can get informal education.
- Informal education is when one is not studying in a school and do not use any particular learning method.
- It is not pre-panned.
- It may be done at home, some marketplace or at hotel.
- It is not imparted by instution like school or college.
- It is not given according to fixed schedule or timetable.
- There is no syllabus or circullum required to be followed.
- Informal education consists of experiences and actually living in the family or community.
Examples of Informal Education
- Children learning their mother tongue.
- Children learning basic alphabets or numeric characters.
- It could be spontaneous as well, " If a person learns about opening bank account from other".
Characteristics of Informal Education
- It is independent of the formal education boundary wall.
- No defined syllabus or curriculum.
- It is no time-table and not pre-planned.
- No need to pay fees as this form of education is driven by daily experience and learning by new things.
- It is a lifelong process in a natural way.
- No certificate or degree is given.
- One can get this form of education from life experience, friends, family, etc.
Advantages of Informal Education
- It is more natural and can be learned anywhere and at any time.
- One learns through their own interest. There is no forceful learning.
- The medium used for this is social media, the internet, libraries and books.
- Various techniques are utilised.
- There is no specific time.
- Less costly and time-efficient learning process.
- No need to hire experts as most of the professionals may be willing to share their precious knowledge with students/public through social media and the internet.
