  • The meaning of the word orient according to oxford dictionary is ‘country of east specially East-Asia’.
  • Oriental institutes are especially devoted to Indological studies (the study of culture).
  • It became necessary to revive the ancient knowledge and wisdom of the country after the decline of ancient universities like Nalanda university and takshila university.
  • In the 19th and 20th century western scholars took interest in reviving this form of learning.
  • These institutes collect work of ancient manuscripts in the oriental language like Prakrit and Sanskrit.
  • It deals with religion, literature, grammar, arts and sciences.
  • India’s ancient manuscripts lie buried in ancient temples and maths and the oriental institutes have successfully deciphered and taken care of them. They have also successfully made these resources available to us in written form.

Some of the institute of Oriental learning

1. Asiatic society

  • The Asiatic Society originated during the British rule in India.
  • It was founded to further the cause of “Oriental research".
  • William jones established this on 15 January 1784 in Calcutta.

2. Bhandarkar oriental research institute

  • The institute was established in 1917 at Pune.
  • Its aim was to commemorate the work and life of R.G Bhandarkar. He was a distinguished pioneer of scientific ontology in India.

3. Adyar Library

  • At Adyar, the theosophical society of madras was established.
  • It was established by Col Olcott in 1886.
  • This library has become a research centre on oriental studies.

4. Kuppusvami Sastri Research institute

  • It was established in the memory of great saint S. Kuppusvami Sastri in 1944.
  • It brings a Journal of Oriental Research.

5.Madras Sanskrit college

  • The college was established by V.Krishnaswamy in 1905.
  • The course was modelled on the traditional methods of teaching.
  • The subject taught are Vedas, Vedanta, Mimasa and Smirtis.

6. Oriental research institute (Mysore)

  • It was established by Chamaraja Wodeyar, the king of Mysore state.
  • It was established in the year 1891 in Mysore,
  • The institute has brought a large number of books in Sanskrit and in Kannada.

7. Oriental Research Institute (Tirupati)

  • It is the place of oriental learning in Andhra Pradesh.
  • It was managed by Tirumala-Tirupati Devasthanams.
  • After the establishment of Sri Venkateshwara University in 1954, it was oriental research institute was handed to it.
  • It was established in 1941.

8. Government Sanskrit college

  • East India Company established this in 1824.
  • The subject taught were philosophy, grammar, astrology and Ayurveda.

9.Orinental institute (Baroda)

  • It was established in 1893 in the instance of Sayyaji Rao Gayakvad.
  • It started with a small collection of manuscripts and printed texts.

Mythic Society (Bangalore)

  • It was established in 1909 at the initiative of F.J Richards.
  • It was established for the study and research of religion, history, ethnology, philosophy and culture.
