Vocabulary plays a very important role in enhancing your communication skills, be it written or spoken. As you glance through the newspaper every day, you come across a number of new words. Your reading exercise is impeded if you do not understand the meaning of a word, or its meaning in a given context. Such challenges could be overcome by inculcating a sound habit of reading. The habit lets you encounter something new every day in the form of words, the meaning of which you were unaware. 

In keeping with the idea of learning and scoring better in English, we bring to you our series, ‘Shape up your Vocabulary from Newspaper Wordlist’. A daily dose of this article acquaints you with commonly (and not so commonly) used English words. The series tries to feature every such word, with its meaning, contextual usage, pronunciation, synonym, antonym, proper use in sentences, etc. That could save you from sitting with a dictionary while reading. Ultimately, it facilitates smooth reading and better intake of the newspaper article.

  • Part of speech: Verb, Noun, Adjective
  • Meaning
    a. to hasten the occurrence of; bring about prematurely, hastily, or suddenly (Verb)
    b. to throw someone or something from a height with great force (Verb)
    c. to separate, or cause a substance to separate from a liquid as a solid (Verb)
    d. a solid substance that is produced from a liquid during a chemical process (Noun)
    e. If an action is precipitate, it is done sooner or faster than expected and without enough thought or preparation (Adjective)
  • Synonyms: hasty, rash, sudden, abrupt
  • Antonyms: slow, deliberate
  • Usage in a sentence: An invasion would certainly precipitate a political crisis.

5. Word: Divergence (विचलन, भिन्नता)

  • Pronunciation: dih-vur-juhns/डाइवर्जन्स
  • Part of Speech
  • Meaning:
    a. the act, fact, or amount of diverging
    b. (in physics, meteorology, etc.) the total amount of flux escaping an infinitesimal volume at a point in a vector field, as the net flow of air from a given region

  • Usage in a sentence: Recently published statistics shows a divergence from previous trends. 

6. Word: Lag (अंतराल, पिछ)

  • Pronunciation: lag
  • Part of Speech: Noun, Verb

    a. fail to keep up with another or others in movement or development. (Verb)
    b. a period of time between one event and another. (Noun)
  • Synonyms: linger, delay, trail, loiter
  • Antonyms: hasten, rush, bustle, bolt, hustle
  • Usage in a Sentence: We're now at the lag end of the project.

7. Word: Visceral (आंत का, आन्त्र)

  • Pronunciation: विसरल/vis-er-uhl
  • Part of Speech: Adjective
  • Meaning
    a. based on deep feeling and emotional reactions rather than on reason or thought
    b. relating to the large organs inside the body, including the heart, stomach, lungs, and intestines
  • Synonyms: instinctive, internal, splanchnic, gut
  • Antonyms: logical, cerebral, reasonable
  • Usage in a Sentence: His approach to acting is visceral rather than intellectual.

8. Word: Loom (संकट मँडराना)

  • Pronunciation: loom/लूम
  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning: appear as a vague form, especially one that is large or threatening
  • Synonyms: menace, emerge, stand out
  • Antonyms: disappear, diminish, remove
  • Use in a Sentence: We should flag those problems that could loom ahead.

9. Word: Expedite (शीघ्रता करना)

  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning: make (an action or process) happen sooner or be accomplished more quickly.
  • Synonyms: accelerate, hasten, speed up, quicken
  • Antonyms: delay, impede, hinder, check
  • Usage in a Sentence: We must expedite the development of the Southwest area of our country.

10. Word: Roll out (बेलना)

  • Pronunciation: rohl-out/ रोल आउट
  • Part of Speech: Phrasal verb
  • Meaning: to make a new product, service, or system available for the first time
  • Synonyms: introduce, make available, market
  • Usage in Sentence: The company plans to roll out the scheme across Europe in the coming months.

The grandstand roll out of the one on one interactions of the biggest personalities created an excitement like never before. We were akin to witness the auras colliding with each other. But it was nothing like we expected. Their mismatched opinions created a stark atmosphere and at one point showed their virulent nature where they precipitate their opinions and neglects the divergent views.
