"Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao" is one of the numerous steps being taken by the government to generate awareness and improve the efficiency of welfare services meant for women. The aim of the scheme is to Save girl child, educate girl child and it was introduced with a Rs.100 crore corpus, in various districts of the country and has been moving in the intended direction of development, with its activities being funded through the Nirbhaya Fund.
"Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao" is an initiative that has been taken up to protect, and aid in the development of, the daughters of our country. With the child sex-ratio of the country going haywire (846 per 1000 male children in the year 2015), it is obvious that technology is now being wrongly used for sex determination and the eventual female foeticide. This scheme has mainly been functioning on the lines of gender equality and women empowerment. Of the many activities intended to become part of this scheme, the Main Objectives of this initiatives are:
- Prevention of gender biased sex selective elimination
- Ensuring protection & survival of the girl child
- Ensuring education and participation of the girl child
Also, as part of the initiative, "Sukanya Samridhi Yojna" was introduced to encourage birth and education of the girl child. According to this scheme, a bank account of the girl child will have more interest and tax benefits.
As part of this scheme, a hashtag "SelfieWithDaughter had also been doing rounds on various social media platforms around the globe. This hashtag had started when a village Sarpanch in Haryana took a selfie with his daughter and posted it on social media.
The main challenge of this scheme, however, is not the arrangement of funds, but the lack of proper action being taken against those who violate the laws and regulations meant for women.
