Roots of English (Part VI): Best way to learn new vocabulary each day!

Roots of English: A lot of aspirants have the fear of English or what is commonly known as the “Anglophobia”. It will go away as your vocabulary skills are build up. By now, you all must have become aware of what “root” means. Most of the English words have Greek or Latin origin. Learning a root word can help you learn new words, enhance vocabulary and may help you become proficient in spoken English.

Here we are with the 6th session of Roots of English. Hope this will help you with your English language preparation.

The English language is made up of four parts; GREEK ROOTS, GERMAN ROOTS, FRENCH ROOTS, LATIN ROOTS

Now if you learn these roots you can figure out the meaning of hundreds of English language words without even knowing their exact meaning.

The first question arises here is what is root?

A root is the part of the word which gives instructions to a word. Now, how many parts is a word made of?

A word is made up of three parts.

For e.g. - subtracted

Sub (prefix) --------tract (root) ----------ed (suffix)

Note: PREFIX---a word, letter or number placed before another.

SUFFIX---a letter or a group of letters added to the end of a word to change its meaning.

CASE I 

Consider ERG as a ROOT means work, effect, disturbance, surprise, activity. The words that can be formed of this particular root word are; 

ERGONOMICS---- the study of people's efficiency in their working environment.

SYNERGY ---- the combined power, profits, etc. that can be achieved by two organizations or groups of people working together rather than separately:

POLTERGEIST---a ghost or other supernatural being supposedly responsible for physical disturbances such as making loud noises and throwing objects about.

ENERGY---- the strength and vitality required for sustained physical or mental activity.

ERG ---- a unit of work or energy, equal to the work done by a force of one dyne when its point of application moves one centimetre in the direction of action of the force.

ALLERGY ---- a damaging (effect) immune response by the body to a substance, especially a particular food, pollen, fur, or dust, to which it has become hypersensitive.

ERGOMETER ---- an apparatus which measures work or energy expended during a period of physical exercise.

ERGOGRAPH ---- an apparatus for measuring the work capacity of a muscle.

ERGOPHOBIA ---- is an abnormal and persistent fear of work

CASE II 

ROOT ---- FA or FESS means speak, quality, character

Now words we can guess of are -

CONFABULATION ----  the act of having a conversation or a discussion.

INEFFABLE  --- incapable of being expressed in words.

INFAMY -----  shameful or criminal conduct or character

DEFAME ---- to attack someone or someone’s reputation, character, or good name by making slanderous or libelous statements.

FESSED ----- confess, own up.

FABLE ---- a short story, typically with animals as characters, conveying a moral/ tell fictitious tales.

CONFESS ----  declare, admit that one has committed a crime or done something wrong.

FABULOUS ---- extraordinary (quality), especially extraordinarily large.

FAME ---- the state of being known by many people, quality.

FAMOUS ---- known about by many people, Fame.

PROFESS ---- claim, often falsely, that one has (a quality or feeling).
