Roots of English (Mis/Miso - Hate, Disgust, Wrong)

Roots of English is one of the most amusing ways to learn abounding words with a single root word. Visual images do have an impact which lasts for a long time, roots of English helps you in commemorating the word with images & pronunciation to utter the word with appropriate pronunciation. Today we are here with another article of our series Roots of English. Hope this format will help you in adding new words of vocab to your bucket list.

Root word for today: Mis/Miso

Today we have taken 'Mis/Miso' as a ROOT which has a meaning - Hate, Disgust for, wrong

Now with the help of this one root, you can come out with the conclusion of several other English words. Such as,

1) Miscreant  - (mis-kree-yant) - a person who has done something wrong or unlawful, an individual who has misbehaved

Usage - We need tougher penalties to discourage miscreants.

2) Misconstrue - (mis-con-strue) - interpret (a person's words or actions) wrongly.

Usage - Many readers misconstrued the advertisement to mean that they would get something for nothing, but they were disappointed when the salesman pointed out the fine print.

3) Misanthrope - (mis-an-thrope) - Someone who has a hatred or distrust of all people (mankind).

Usage - My aunt is a misanthrope who will not even talk to the members of her own family.

4) Misogynist- (mi-sog-y-nist) -  A hatred of women, an intense dislike of females 

Usage - In my opinion, our professor is a misogynist as he gives women lower grades than men despite the work quality.

5) Misogamy - (mi-sog-a-mist) - Hatred of marriage

Usage - It is the fear of responsibility that eventually leads to misogamy.

6) Misoneism - (mis-o-ne-ism) - A hatred of novelty or new things or new trends, Hatred of innovation or change.

Usage - If you're still using a wall telephone with a cord and refusing to buy a cell phone, your more tech-savvy friends might accuse you of misoneism.

7) Misarchist: - (Mis-ark-ist) - A hater of government or authority.

Usage -  Corrupt and illegal money holders are behaving as misarchist because this government does not support corruption.

8) Misology: - (mi-sol-o-gy) - Hatred of reason, discussion, or arguments; also, hatred of learning or knowledge.

Usage - As a started to explain the benefits of Demonetization, Riya left the room due to her misology.

9)Misocynist: - (Mis-oci-ni) - Someone who hates dogs.

Usage - Because his sister was ill for many days due to a dog bite, Rahul became a Misocynist.

10)Misetos: - (Misi-tos) - Hateful.

Usage - The acts of North Korea's president are misetos.

Basic Knowledge related to Root Words of English 

English language is made up of four parts. These are -

  • GREEK ROOTS
  • GERMAN ROOTS
  • FRENCH ROOTS
  • LATIN ROOTS

Now if you learn these roots, you can figure out the meaning of hundreds of English language words without even knowing their exact meaning. Before we go further, let us answer some basic questions for you first.

What is a root?

A root is the part of the word which gives instructions to a word.

How many parts is a word made of?

A word is made up of three parts.

For example – Unhappily

Here 'Un' is a prefix, 'happy' is the root and 'ly' is the suffix.

Note: PREFIX is a word, letter or number placed before another.

SUFFIX is a letter or a group of letters added to the end of a word to change its meaning.
