English language is made up of four parts. These are -
- GREEK ROOTS
- GERMAN ROOTS
- FRENCH ROOTS
- LATIN ROOTS
Now if you learn these roots, you can figure out the meaning of hundreds of English language words without even knowing their exact meaning. Before we go further, let us answer some basic questions for you first.
What is a root?
A root is the part of the word which gives instructions to a word.
How many parts is a word made of?
A word is made up of three parts.
For example - Unhappily
Here 'Un' is a prefix, 'happy' is the root and 'ly' is the suffix.
Note: PREFIX is a word, letter or number placed before another.
SUFFIX is a letter or a group of letters added to the end of a word to change its meaning.
Now today we have taken 'Port ' as a ROOT which has variant meanings: carry.
Now with the help of this one root you can come out with conclusion of several other English words. Such as,
1) Portage - (Port-age) - The route over which boats and supplies are carried over land from one lake or river to another
Usage - They would only run the rapid if they couldn't line or portage.
2) Porter - (Port-er) - An attendant who carries travelers' luggage for them
Usage - I will ask a porter to carry the baggages for me.
3) Comport - (Cum-port) - Conduct oneself, behave
Usage - They should be able to comport themselves as they want.
4) Apport - (Ap-port) - A material object produced supposedly by occult means, especially at a seance
Usage - If it was, indeed, an apport, it is surely one of the most remarkable for distance and for purpose recorded of any private circle.
5) Asportation - (As-port-ta-tion) - The detachment, movement, or carrying away of property, formerly an essential component of the crime of larceny
Usage - Three usucaptions that are not entitled to a fine: fear, warning, asportation.
6) Teleportation - (Tele-port-ta-tion) - (especially in science fiction) transport or be transported across space and distance instantly
Usage - Slow moving but capable of teleportation.
7) Teleport - (Tele-port) - To convey oneself by teleportation
Usage - They steal your stuff and then teleport away.
8) Purport - (Pur-port) - The meaning or sense of something, typically a document or speech
Usage - The purport of the statement is that the firm is bankrupt.
9) Deport - (De-port) - To carry or send away from a country; to banish
Usage - People with invalid papers are deported to another country.
10) Report - (Re-port) - A collection of writing that carries information to be share again with someone new
Usage - He wrote up his visit in a report of over 600 pages.
