As you are well aware of the drastic changes that took place in the English pattern of the exams conducted last year. Roots of English is an introduction to English with the study of Latin & Greek words. we have started a new format of learning words roots through images. Hope it will help, do let us know in the comment section about our new initiative.
English language is made up of four parts. These are -
- GREEK ROOTS
- GERMAN ROOTS
- FRENCH ROOTS
- LATIN ROOTS
Now if you learn these roots, you can figure out the meaning of hundreds of English language words without even knowing their exact meaning. Before we go further, let us answer some basic questions for you first.
What is a root?
A root is the part of the word which gives instructions to a word.
How many parts is a word made of?
A word is made up of three parts.
For example - Exported
Here 'Ex' is a prefix, 'port' is the root and 'ed' is the suffix.
Note: PREFIX is a word, letter or number placed before another.
SUFFIX is a letter or a group of letters added to the end of a word to change its meaning.
Now today we have taken 'Luc' as a ROOT which means Light
Now with the help of this one root you can come out with conclusion of several other English words. Such as,
1) Elucidate - (El-u-ci-date) - To bring light upon something
Usage - Even if you cannot read, the pictures under the words will elucidate the comic’s message.
2) Illumination - (ill-umi-na-tion) - Lighting or light
Usage - If the light bulb is too dim to illuminate the room, it should be replaced.
3) Lucent - (Lu-cent) - Glowing with or giving off light
Usage - Because it was overcast, I could not see the lucent moon in the sky.
4) Luciform - (Lucy-form) - Being light
5) Luculent - (Luk-u-lent) - Brightly shining
Usage - Luculent sun it is.
6) Luminary - (Lumi-nar-e) - The lightning star of an area, an expert
Usage - Using a recorded story on tape and the accompanying novel, the autodidact learned how to read while in an isolated prison cell.
7) Luminosity - (Lum-in-o-city) - The quantity of lightness
Usage - The movie editor used the computer program to give the actress the luminous appearance of an angel.
8) Lustre - (Lust-er) - Producing gentle or soft light
Usage - The lustre of the Milky Way.
9) Pellucid - (Pell-u-sid) - Lucid, clear
Usage - The poem was easy to understand because of its pellucid style.
10) Translucent - (Trans-lu-cent) - Allowing light to pass through diffusely
Usage - The translucent storage bin allowed me to see a blurred image of what was inside the container.
