The English Language is an important part of every Banking Exam. Some aspirants find English very hard and fail to secure good marks. This happens partly due to the fact that they lack a good vocabulary. We have started this series to aid aspirants to improve their vocabulary.

The series 'Root of English' helps you identify the root words of English which in turn helps you identify the meaning of a word based on the particular root word. With the help of this, you can improve your vocabulary in a very easy way. Also, the images attached helps to memorize a word for a longer time, so let's go through it now!
The English language is made up of four parts. These are -

Now if you learn these roots, you can figure out the meaning of hundreds of English language words without even knowing their exact meaning. Before we go further, let us answer some basic questions for you first.
Q. What is a root?
Ans: root is the part of the word which gives instructions to a word.
Q. How many parts is a word made of?
Ans: The word is made up of three parts.
- Prefix
- Root
- Suffix
For example - Transferable
Here 'Trans' is a prefix, 'Fer' is the root and 'able' is the suffix.
Note: PREFIX is a word, letter or number placed before another. SUFFIX is a letter or a group of letters added to the end of a word to change its meaning.
Root Word for Today: Fic
Today we have taken 'FIC' as a ROOT which has various meanings: Make / Do / Prepare
Now with the help of this one root, you can come out with the conclusion of several other English words. Such as,
1) Deification: (di-fic-a-shun) - Making a god out of something/to treat someone or something as a god/to glorify as of supreme worth

2) Efficacious: ( ef-i-key-shus) - to be able to be very effective/to produce a desired or intended result; effective
Usage - Yoga is very efficacious at reducing stress.
3)Edification: (ed-uh-fi-key-shun) - to do something to benefits, someone, by teaching him something that improves or enlightens his knowledge or character.
Usage - Because Shirley is a committed lifelong learner, she visits the library at least once a week for personal edification and intellectual enrichment.
4)Maleficent: ( muh-lef-uh-sunt) - to do something to cause harm or evil.
Usage - He is a maleficent type person who derives happiness from harming his opponents.
5)Ratification: (rat-uh-fi-key-shun) - the action of signing or giving formal consent to a treaty, contract, or agreement, making it officially valid/official approval or confirmation by all involved.
Usage - The shareholders are agreed for the ratification of any merger that will increase their dividends.
6)Artifice: (ahr-tuh-fis) - to do clever tricks to deceive someone/a move made to obtain an advantage or trick someone
Usage - The crooked delivery guy hoped his artifice of overcharging customers would go unnoticed by his supervisors.
7)Ramification: (ram-uh-fi-key-shun) - An anticipated result or consequence from an action/a change that makes a situation more complicated
Usage -Jason was shocked when he got to know that the ramification of his cheating in exam was immediate expulsion from the university.
8)Prolific: (pruh-lif-ik) - to produce a lot of something/producing abundant results or works/very fruitful
Usage -The company hopes to woo investors with news of its prolific stock returns.
9)Proficient: (pruh-fish-ent) - the act of doing things well
Usage - Because Kurt is a proficient programmer, he earns a high salary for his work.
11) Personification: ( per-son-uh-fi-key-shun) - : Making an object resemble a person/a thing or individual that embodies a specific quality
Usage - To the soldiers, their country’s flag stands as the personification of freedom.
12) Amplification: (kal-er-if-ik) - Making something big/the action of enlarging upon or adding detail to a story or statement.
Usage - The words 'no real prospect of succeeding' do not need any amplification.
13) Beneficiary: ( bene-fis-iary) - One who receives a benefit
Usage - As the billionaire’s only beneficiary, Hina will receive the entire estate.
14)Deficient: (dih-fish-ent) - the act of lacking, ‘made’ lacking or off of what it should be/not having enough of a specified quality or ingredient.
Usage - Your diet is deficient in vitamin B and iron.
15)Pacification: ( pac-i-fi-ca-shun) (मनुहार)- the act of ‘making’ peace/to reduce the anger or agitation of someone.
Usage - The minister tried to do pacification of the citizens who were very angry due to the accidents.
