By Akshay Khandelwal|Updated : November 13th, 2020

A lot of aspirants have the fear of English or what is commonly known as the “Anglophobia”. It will go away as your vocabulary skills are build up. By now, you all must have become aware of what “root” means. Most of the English words have Greek or Latin origin. Learning a root word can help you learn new words, enhance vocabulary and may help you become proficient in spoken English.

The English language is made up of four parts; GREEK ROOTS, GERMAN ROOTS, FRENCH ROOTS, LATIN ROOTS

A word is made up of three parts. E.g. subtracted

Sub (prefix) --------tract (root) ----------ed (suffix)

Let us get going with our 5th session of the topic Roots of English and explore some more of these root words which are most frequently used in English.

CASE I

ROOT = CIDE

Meaning =  Killing or murder or cutting

Now with the help of this one root, you can come out with a number of English words. Such as,

SUICIDE----killing oneself

MATRICIDE----killing one’s mother

PATRICIDE----killing one’s father

FRATRICIDE----killing one’s own brother

INFANTICIDE----killing a new born

FOETICIDE----killing an unborn child

INSECTICIDES----chemicals which are used for killing insects

PESTICIDES----chemicals which are used for killing pests

HOMICIDE----killing a human being

CASE II

ROOT ----Pater or Patri

Meaning =  father or fatherhood or relating to fathers or fatherland

Now with the help of this one root, you can come out with a number of English words. Such as,

PATRIARCHY----A system (a family/ society) which is run by the male head (father) of the family.

PATRIOT----One who loves his nation (the word actually originated from Germany where they call their nation as fatherland instead of the motherland as in our country).

COMPATRIOT----People who belong to the same nation and live together.

EXPATRIATE----People who share the same origin but are currently left in some other nation.

PATERNITY----Fatherhood
