Here we are with the 11th session of the topic Roots of English. Before taking a plunge into it lets take a quick recap of the introduction of the topic;
In English lexicon, a root is a word or a portion of a word from which other words grow. This is supplemented by the addition of a prefix or a suffix. Learning a root word can help you learn new words, enhance vocabulary and may help you become proficient in spoken English.
Most of the English words have Greek or Latin origin. The other root languages for English lexicon are FRENCH and GERMAN.
Let us explore some more of these root words which are most frequently used in English.
FUG = drive away, flee, fly, run away, cheat
(Fug- comes from Latin, where it has the meaning "flee; move.)
FINIFUGAL ----- of someone who tries to avoid or prolong the final moment of a story
SUBTERFUGE ------ deceit used in order to achieve one's goal
REFUGE ---- a place or situation providing safety or shelter who ran away
FEBRIFUGAL ----- Mitigating or removing fever
CENTRIFUGE ---- subject to the action that applies centrifugal force
FEBRIFUGE ---- A medicine adapted to drive away or to reduce fever
FUMIFUGIST ---- A person who, or something that, drives smoke or fumes away
INSECTIFUGE ---- A substance or preparation for driving off or repelling insects
FUGUE ---- a running away
FUGACIOUS ---- tending to disappear, fleeting
FUGITIVE---- a person who has escaped from captivity or is in hiding
OLIG-, OLIGO = little, meagre, tiny, infrequent
(The word comes from the Greek "oligos', few, scanty.)
OLIGACANTHOUS ---- pertaining to having very few spines or sharp-pointed tips on stems or leaves
OLIGANDROUS --- in botany, having fewer than twenty or having very paltry numbers of stamens
OLIGANTHOUS ----- having a very limited number of flowers
OLIGARCH ---- a member of a small number of those who are governing a country
OLIGARCHIC ----- of, pertaining to, or of the nature of a small governmental organization
OLIGCARPOUS ---- having few carpels or fruit
OLIGEMIA ---- a deficiency in the amount of blood in the body or any organ or tissue
OLIGHYDRIA ---- a state of decreased water content
OLIGOAEROBIC ---- a reference to organisms that grow in conditions of low oxygen concentration
OLIGOAMNIOS ---- the presence of a less than normal amount of amniotic fluid
Perhaps, the best way to deal with “Anglophobia” is to familiarise yourself with the English language in the most systematic way.
