17. TCS becomes world’s most powerful IT Services brand –

  • Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India’s top IT services and consulting company said that it has been rated as the world’s most powerful brand in IT Services by Brand Finance, the world’s leading brand valuation firm.
  • Across all industries, Disney was rated as the most powerful brand and Apple as the most valuable brand for 2016.

18. India becomes world’s largest exporter of Rice - India has overtaken Thailand as the world’s largest rice exporter in 2015, shipping 23 million tonnes in the year 2015 as compared to Thailand’s 9.8 million tons.

  • Vietnam was ranked third largest rice exporter with 6.4 million tonnes.
  • In terms of imports, China remains the number one importer of rice.

 19. releases list of 20 smart cities

  • The Union government announced the names of the first 20 urban areas that will be developed as smart cities.
  • Budget of Rs 50,802 crores has been proposed in selected smart cities and towns during the five-year period.

20. India Celebrates 67th Republic Day -

  • India celebrates its 67th Republic Day with President Francois Hollande as the chief guest
  • It was the fifth time a French president has been chief guest, the biggest honour India can bestow on a foreign leader.
  • French army first foreign contingent participate at R – day - Soldiers of French Army’s 35th Infantry Regiment, which was Led by Lt Col Paul created history by marching down the Rajpath during the Republic Day parade, becoming the first foreign military contingent to take part in the celebrations.

21. Prime Minister Narendra Modi becomes the second most followed Indian on Twitter. His following of 17.4 million stands close to Amitabh Bachan, who has 18.9 million followers. Shah Rukh Khan takes the third spot with his 17,351,100 followers.

22. Google Launches First Public Wifi Service in Mumbai, India

  • Google, in partnership with Indian Railways, launched its first free high-speed public WiFi service in the country at the Mumbai Central Railway Station.
  • The service will be made available next in Allahabad, Patna, Jaipur, and Ranchi.

27. Kerala becomes 1st state to achieve 100% primary education - This has been achieved through the primary education equivalency drive of the state literacy mission — Athulyam.

 28. Central Institute for Research on Buffaloes (CIRB) in Hisar becomes India’s second centre to produce a cloned buffalo ‘Cirb Gaurav’.

29. Telangana become the first State in the country to introduce compulsory gender education at the graduate level.

Note: In this regard, state government has introduced bilingual textbook titled ‘Towards a World of Equals’ on a pilot basis in engineering colleges.

30. Sikkim becomes India’s first organic state. Sikkim has become India’s first fully organic state by implementing organic practices on around 75,000 hectares of agricultural land..

31.MP state govt. inks MoU with IFC for World’s largest Solar Plant

  • The Madhya Pradesh government has inked a pact with International Finance Corporation (IFC), member of the World Bank Group, to set up the world’s largest solar energy plant with a capacity of 750 MW.

32. BHEL commissioned the second 660 MW supercritical unit of Lalitpur Super Thermal Power Project (STPP) in Uttar Pradesh.

Note: Last month, BHEL has successfully commissioned the first unit of 3×660 MW Prayagraj Super Thermal Power Project (STPP) at Bara in Allahabad district of Uttar Pradesh.

33. Somnath Temple to invest in Gold Monetisation Scheme - Somnath Temple Trust is all set to become first temple from Gujarat to deposit its idle gold in the Gold Monetization Scheme.

34. Mumbai, Delhi figure in world’s top-30 ‘super cities’ –

  • India’s financial capital Mumbai has been ranked 22nd while the national capital Delhi is placed at 24th.
  • The list is topped by Tokyo, which along with New York, London and Paris, make the top four ‘super cities’ These four were the destination of over 50 per cent of all foreign capital invested in the Global Top 30 cities.

  • The French Senate unanimously passed a law to ban large food stores from throwing away food that is approaching its expiration date.

4. India become the second largest smartphone market -

  • India has surpassed the US to become the largest smartphone market in the world after China, by number of units sold, as the availability of 4G handsets fueled demand, a new report has revealed.

5. India becomes Associate Member of EMBO

  • India is second country outside the European region to be an Associate Member State of EMBO. First one being Singapore which had signed such agreement with European Molecular Biology Conference (EMBC) in 2015.

6. WHO declares Zika virus outbreak as International Emergency

  • Zika virus is a mosquito-borne virus transmitted by Aedes aegypti
  • The virus was first identified in 1947 in Uganda and its name has been derived from Zika Forest.

7. Vietnam inaugurated the world’s longest three-rope cable car system in Lao Cai province.

8. Alphabet becomes The Most Valuable Public Company in the World

  • Google’s parent company Alphabet surpassed Apple to become the most valuable U.S. traded company in the world.

10. Denmark is the world’s least corrupt country. Denmark has emerged as the least corrupt country in the world for a fourth consecutive year, according to the non-governmental organisation Transparency International.

  • India rank at 76th spot on the list.

11. Germany the ‘best country in the world’. Germany is the best country in the world, according to new analysis unveiled at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
