Study Notes On Statement

The topic Statement mainly comes under logical reasoning. In this section, the statement is given which is followed by a set of conclusions. Now we have to choose the conclusion that logically follows the statement in the most logical manner. In some questions, the conclusions sometimes can be directly understood by reading the statement, and sometimes the students need to analyze it to get the indirect conclusion. Sometimes only one conclusion may follow and sometimes both or all conclusions follow. And in some cases, either one of them follows or none of them follow. It totally depends upon the student’s perspective power to solve the statements to find out the right answer.
Below are some of the most important questions based on the Statement that is very vital from the exam point of view. So for better understanding let’s go through the variety of examples that will make you understand the core of the Statement very well-

Example 1
Statement:
Some people say that bad thoughts come to their minds when they try to sleep.
Conclusion:
I. Only a few people see bad thoughts while sleeping.
II. All good thoughts come in the morning.

AThe only conclusion I follow
BOnly conclusion II follows
CEither I or II follows
DNeither I nor II follows
EBoth I and II follow

Ans: A

Logic- Here it clearly mentioned in the statement that some people say that bad thoughts come to their mind while sleeping but not all people. Therefore, in conclusion, I follow the statement. It is not mentioned anywhere in the sentence that only bad thoughts come in the morning. Therefore, conclusion II does not follow the statement.

Example 2

Statements: In a one-day cricket match, the total runs made by a team were 100. Out of these 80 runs were made by spinners.

Conclusions: I. 80% of the team consists of spinners.

II. The opening batsmen were spinners.

AThe only conclusion I follow
BOnly conclusion II follows
COnly conclusion II follows
DNeither I nor II follows

 Ans: D

Logic- According to the statement, 80% of the total runs were made by spinners. So, It does not follow. Nothing about the opening batsmen is mentioned in the statement. So, II also does not follow.

Example 3
Statement: Vegetable prices are soaring in the market. Conclusions:

I. Vegetables are becoming a rare commodity.

II. People cannot eat vegetables.

Aif only conclusion I follow.
Bif only conclusion II follows.
Cif either I or II follows.
Dif neither I nor II follows.

Ans: D

Logic- The availability of vegetables is not mentioned in the given statement. So, It does not follow. Also, II is not directly related to the statement and so it also does not follow.

Example 4

Statement: Despite doing great inventions and research India is still a developing country because of poor population control. Conclusions:

I. The population of developing countries will not continue to increase in the future.

II. It will be very difficult for the governments of developing countries to provide their people with a decent quality of life.

AIf only the conclusion I follow
BIf only conclusion II follows
CIf neither I nor II follows
DIf both I and II follow.

Ans: C

Logic- Conclusion I is quite contrary to the given statement. So, I do not follow. Conclusion II mentions certain aspects of the state discussed in the statement but does not fully follow. So the answer is option C, neither I nor II follows

Example 5

Statement: It is hard for a country to achieve self-dependency in today's world. Conclusions:

I. It is hard to grow and produce all that a country needs.

II. Countrymen, in general, have become lazy.

AIf only conclusion I follow
BIf only conclusion II follows
CIf neither I nor II follows
DIf both I and II follow

Answer- A

Logic- We can’t make the judgment that all the countrymen of a particular country are lazy, hence conclusion II does not follow. Since self-dependency means that a country is able to produce all that basic need & demands. Here the statement says that it’s hard for a country to achieve self-dependency in today's world, so we can safely conclude it is hard for a country to grow and produce all that it needs. Hence, the conclusion I follow.
