NIACL AO Prelim Exam is going to be held on 30th January 2019. To help you out in your preparation, we are sharing English Language Preparation study notes & tips for NIACL AO Prelims Exam 2018. As per the new exam pattern, sectional timing is introduced in Prelim phase of the exam. Now. we know English has come up as a tougher section for candidates in the recent pattern of exams as students used to spend more time on Quant and Reasoning section. But after the introduction of sectional timing in Prelim phase, you have to give equal attention to this subject.

Many new type of questions has been introduced in the English section which proved to be a complete surprise for candidates. But if you are well aware of the basic grammar rules and your reading speed is good, then you can always score well in this section, no matter what the pattern of examination is.

At first, We will check what are the important topics which you must practice to score high. For this, we will be considering all the topics which were asked in NIACL AO 2016 and NICL AO 2017.

  • Sentence Connector
  • Paragraph & Sentence Completion
  • Odd one out
  • Error Detection
  • Match the column
  • Para Summary
  • Other New pattern Questions

Now, let's discuss each and every topic in detail:

Reading Comprehension-

  • Reading Comprehension is given in the exam to judge the capability of understanding the passage and to analyze the problem in correct perspective. The questions will not come direct and hence have to understand the passage to answer.

  • Candidates should have a good reading ability for attempting these questions

  • Don’t spend much time on the single question.

  • Skip those questions which ask you to find out the correct or incorrect from the passage or have multiple options to look for.
  • Keeping time factor in mind, it’s better to attempt only Antonyms and Synonyms.

Cloze Test -

  • Its options may appear bit confusing but ones you are familiar with the ideas of the passage you can eliminate the odd one out.
  • Read the passage and go with the flow of the sentence to get the message behind the passage.
  • If there is any doubt it’s better to skip that question rather than attempting it to satisfy your ego.
  • Regular Practice is the key to solve cloze test with maximum accuracy.

Cloze Test Study Notes

Sentence Rearrangement/ Para Jumbles -

  • Read complete passage properly to find out the theme of the passage
  • Find out the Independent sentence, it’ll give you the lead (most of the time its 1stsentence)
  • Find out the connecting sentences ( looking carefully for the repetition of a noun with a pronoun)
  • Identify the pair while looking for some cause, effect, the problem than its solution.
  • At last, find the message, result, and conclusion mainly representing the purpose of the passage. (special words – thus, therefore, hence, however, so etc.)

  • Read the whole sentence to get the message and go with the flow.
  • In case of double fillers, Go with the second part first to get the proper sequence or meaning of the sentence while keeping the grammar rules in mind (especially tense.)
  • Think of the logic behind the option, you can also go with Odd one out strategy.
  • Accuracy is the key, so better be sure before marking your answer.

Fillers Study Notes

Sentence Correction & Phrase Replacement–

  • Read the original sentence carefully and try to spot grammatical errors by identifying whether something “sounds” wrong.
  • Always look at every choice.
  • Even when the original sentence seems fine, pay attention to the grammar that it tests and look through the choices systematically to see if any provides a better option.
  • As you locate each error, eliminate all of the choices that contain that error.
  • Do not read each answer choice back into the sentence individually; that wastes time and invites inaccuracy.
  • Instead, identify the differences among the choices and eliminate those that offer less effective or grammatically incorrect alternatives.

Sentence Correction Study Notes

Vocabulary based Questions

  • Instead of asking synonyms/ antonyms in the passage, individual words are specified in question and you need to identify the option that is most similar or most opposite in meaning to the given word.
  • Such questions are particularly tricky because unless you understand the word completely, there is no way that you can attempt such a question.
  • For this, you’ll need to work on your vocabulary. Read at least 2-3 articles regularly and identify new words.
  • Look up their meanings and try to form sentences from these words on your own. Make sure that you practice it regularly.

Spotting Error–

  • In order to solve questions on spotting errors, the first step you should take is to read the complete sentence carefully. In most of the cases, you will be able to detect the error in the first go itself.
  • While reading the entire sentence, you must carefully check the subject-verb agreement.
  • If you can still not detect the error or you are still unsure of the correct answer, then you must read each individual part of the sentence and closely examine which part consists of an error.

Spotting Error Study Notes

Sentence Connector

  • In these questions, 2 different sentences are given and you are provided with a set of starters or connectors.
  • You need to identify a suitable connector with the help of which you can combine the two sentences so that it again forms a meaningful sentence.
  • Here again, you’ll have to eliminate options by using each option as a connector and applying it to the sentences given.

Sentence Connector study notes

Odd One Out based

  • In these topics, you are given a sentence/passage in question and different sentences in options and you have to identify which of the given option does not logically follow or conclude the given sentence of the passage.
  • While attempting these questions, carefully read the passage given and then through the options.
  • You’ll be able to make out which sentence conveys different meaning once you go through the options. You can solve Para Completion or Paragraph Summary based questions in a similar manner.

Odd one Out & Irrelevant statement study notes

Match the column

  • In 'Match the column' questions, Candidates need to join two parts of a sentence in a way that they form a meaningful and grammatically correct sentence.
  • Two columns are provided in the question. In this, three/four incomplete sentences are given in both the columns.
  • The first column consists of the first half of these sentences and the second column consists of the second half of these sentences.
  • Students are required to match both the columns in a way that all the sentences are connected properly in a meaningful way.

Idiom Based

In these questions, an idiom/ phrase is provided in the question and different sentences carrying the meaning of that idiom are provided in options. You need to identify which sentence best conveys the meaning of that idiom. In order to answer such questions, you should be well versed in this topic. Try to study 5-8 idioms on a regular basis in order to score well in such questions.

Study Notes:

Things to remember during the NIACL AO exam 2018-

1. Avoid guesswork in the exam when your instinct does not take over.
2. Do not attempt questions for which you are not completely sure. One wrong question can make a lot of difference in the final IBPS PO cut off.
3. Try to attempt Cloze test, Fill in the blanks, Spotting errors and Sentence improvement/correction before attempting comprehension.
4. Read the instructions of the questions very carefully. Concepts of all new pattern questions are the same. If you read and try to understand the instructions properly then you can easily solve any new pattern question.
