How to Approach English Section in SBI Clerk Main 2022 Exam: In this article, we will be sharing the English preparation tips, ideal approach, and many other important tips. You must follow them to prepare the subject effectively. 

In the SBI Clerk Mains English Language, a total of 40 questions will be asked carrying 40 marks and only 35 minutes will be given to attempt this section. So, you have to attempt 27+ questions with accuracy.

Now, for this, you have to plan your exam strategy beforehand. 1. Reading Comprehension-

  • Read newspaper daily, This will increase your reading skills, and sometimes topics on socio-issues are also asked.
  • Don’t waste much of your time on a single question.
  • Attempt the question in the last where you have to find correct/incorrect words/phrases/answers from the passage.
  • Try to attempt Antonyms and Synonyms as they do not consume much time.

2. Cloze Test -

  • Its options may appear a bit confusing but once you get familiar with the idea behind the passage you will be able to solve it easily.
  • Read the passage carefully to get the message behind the passage asked.
  • If there is any doubt skip the question and move on to the next one.
  • Daily practice is the key to solving the cloze test with100% accuracy.

  • Read the sentence carefully to get the idea.
  • Check the second part to know what exactly the meaning is.
  • Adopt odd one out a strategy to find the correct answers.

4. Sentence Correction/Sentence Improvement/Phrase Replacement –

  • Read the sentence carefully and recall all the basic grammar rules to spot the error.
  • Always check each option. as there can be an option very close to the answers just to confuse you.
  • Even when the original sentence seems fine, check the options carefully and verify the correct option.
  • Eliminate all of the choices that contain that error while you locate each error.

5. Spotting Error or Error Detection–

  • To solve questions on spotting errors, the first step should be reading the whole sentence carefully. In most cases, you will detect the error probably in one go.
  • You must carefully check the subject-verb agreement while reading the entire sentence.
  • If you are still unable to detect the error or you are unsure of the correct answer, then you must read each part of the sentence and closely check which part consists of an error.

6. Sentence Rearrangement/ Para Jumbles - 

  • Firstly, read the complete passage properly to find out the theme of the passage given.
  • Check out the individual sentence, it'll help you find the lead.
  • Find out the sentences connecting or those which seem to have a connection with other sentences.
  • Detect the pair while looking for some cause, effect, the problem and then look for its solution.
  • At last, find the message, result, and conclusion mainly representing the purpose of the passage. (special words – thus, therefore, hence, however, so, etc.)

7. Vocabulary based Questions

  • Instead of asking synonyms/ antonyms in the passage, individual words are specified in question and you need to identify the option that is most similar or most opposite in meaning to the given word.
  • Such questions are particularly tricky because unless you understand the word completely, there is no way that you can attempt such a question.
  • For this, you’ll need to work on your vocabulary. Read at least 2-3 articles regularly and identify new words.
  • Look up their meanings and try to form sentences from these words on your own. Make sure that you practice it regularly.

8. Odd One Out based

  • In these topics, you are given a sentence/passage in question and different sentences in options and you have to identify which of the given option does not logically follow or conclude the given sentence of the passage.
  • While attempting these questions, carefully read the passage given and then through the options.
  • You’ll be able to make out which sentence conveys a different meaning once you go through the options. You can solve Para Completion or Paragraph Summary-based questions in a similar manner.

9. Sentence Connector

  • In such types of questions, two different sentences are given and a set of starters or connectors are provided.
  • You are required to identify a suitable connector with the help of which you can combine the sentences so that it makes a meaningful sentence.
  • Now again, eliminate options by applying each option as a connector and using it to the sentences given.

10. Idiom Based

In these questions, an idiom/ phrase is provided the question and different sentences carrying the meaning of that idiom are provided in options. You need to identify which sentence best conveys the meaning of that idiom. To answer such questions, you should be well versed in this topic. Try to study 5-8 idioms regularly to score well in such questions.

Important Tips to attempt the English Language section in the SBI Clerk Main exam- 

1) Always start attempting questions on spotting errors, fillers, sentence rearrangement, etc. as they do not consume much of your time.

2) Do not make random choices when it comes to answering the questions. Be very sure about the accuracy, it matters the most.

3) Most of us are weak at the vocabulary part but regular practice can help you tackle questions on even this topic.

4) While attempting double fillers, there will be one blank which will be easy to identify, and the second one can be related accordingly.
5) Sometimes we face the problem with sentence rearrangement also, so it’s better to identify the first and last sentence first and then arrange the remaining if you can.

6) For comprehension, go through the passage and questions simultaneously. This will help you in answering the question quickly without wasting time.
