How is Ocean Mean Temperature Measured?

By Shubhra Anand Jain|Updated : July 11th, 2022

The ocean mean temperature (OMT) is measured using satellites orbiting the earth to calculate the sea surface temperature (SST) and to predict monsoon. The ocean mean temperature can only be calculated upto a depth of 26 degrees isotherm.

Calculating Ocean Mean Temperature in the Indian Ocean

In the Indian Ocean, the ocean mean temperature is calculated to not only determine the sea temperature but also predict the onset of the monsoon. The OMT is calculated by measuring the ocean thermal energy from January to March. The satellites analyze the quantity of energy produced on the ocean at different wavelengths.
