Global Innovation Index (GII) 2020 has been released. It is the 13th edition of GII showcasing annual ranking of countries by their capacity and success in innovation.

India has climbed 4 spots in the Global Innovation Index 2020 rankings. With this, India is ranked in the top 50 countries for the first time in the GII. Read the full article to know everything about the Global Innovation Index

What is the Global Innovation Index (GII)?

  • Global Innovation Index (GII) is released to provide detailed metrics about the innovation performance of 131 countries and economies around the world.
  • It ranks the countries on 80 indicators including political environment, education, infrastructure, and business sophistication.
  • The index is published annually by Cornell University, INSEAD and the UN World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
  • GII is composed of three indices:
    • Overall GII: Average scores of the Input and Output Sub-Indices.
    • Innovation Input Sub-Index: It includes five pillar capturing national economy elements to enable innovative activities. The pillars are Institutions, Human capital and research, Infrastructure, Market sophistication, and Business sophistication.
    • Innovation Output Sub-Index: It provides information about outputs of the innovative activities. It has two output pillars: Knowledge & technology outputs and Creative outputs. 

Key Findings of Global Innovation Index (GII) 2020

  • Global Innovation Index ranked 131 countries in its 2020 edition.
  • India is placed on 48th rank of Global Innovation Index 2020, showing a jump of 4 positions as it was ranked 52 in Global Innovation Index 2019
  • Looking at the overall score, Switzerland (66.08 scores) comes out to be the world’s most-innovative economy followed by Sweden (62.47), United States of America (60.56), United Kingdom (59.78) and the Netherlands.
  • Among the pillar of Innovation Input Sub-Index, Singapore emerged on the top, followed by Switzerland and Sweden.
  • Among Innovation Output Sub-Index, Switzerland makes a mark by emerging at the top, followed by Sweden and the United Kingdom.

GII and India

  • WIPO had accepted India as one of the leading innovation achievers in the central and southern Asian region, as it has shown a consistent improvement in its innovation ranking for the last 5 years.
  • India GII Ranking in the last 5 year:
    • GII 2015: 81 Rank
    • GII 2016: 66 Rank
    • GII 2017: 60 Rank
    • GII 2018: 57 Rank
    • GII 2019: 52 Rank
    • GII 2020: 48 Rank
  • India ranks in the top 15 among the indicators like ICT services exports, government online services, graduates in science and engineering and R&D-intensive global companies.
  • The report also suggests that due to universities like IIT Delhi and Bombay, IIS Bengaluru and other top scientific publications, India is the lower-middle-income economy with the highest innovation.
  • The index depicted that India Innovation Index, which was released by the NITI Aayog in 2019 is the major step in the direction of decentralization of innovation across all the states of India.
