Global Emissions by Gas
- The key greenhouse gases emitted at the global level are:
Carbon dioxide (CO2):
- The primary source for carbon dioxide emission is fossil fuel.
- It is also emitted through human impacts like land clearing for agriculture, deforestation and degradation of soil.
- Reforestation and improvement in the soil remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
Methane (CH4)
- The main source for the emission of methane is agricultural activities, biomass burning, and energy use.
Nitrous oxide (N2O)
- The main source of emission for nitrous oxide is agricultural activities and fertilizer use.
- Fossil fuel also release nitrous oxide gases.
Fluorinated gases (F-gases):
- The main sources are refrigeration, industrial process.
- The use of consumer products generates fluorinated gases like hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), perfluorocarbons (PFCs), and sulfur hexafluoride (SF6).
Global Emissions by Economic Sector
Electricity and Heat Production
- The burning of natural gas, coal and oil for electricity and heat consumption is the single largestsource of emission.
- It contributes 25 per cent of the total emission.
Industry
- This involves burning fossil fuels for industrial purpose.
- This sector contributes 21 per cent of the total emission.
Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Use
- Under these agriculture contributes the most. This includes the cultivation of crops and livestock.
- Agriculture, forestry and other land used related emission contribute 24% of the total emission.
Transportation
- This sector mainly involves burning fossil fuels for rail, road, marine and air transport.
- Almost all (95%) of the world's transportation energy comes from petroleum-based fuels, largely gasoline and diesel.
- This sector contributes 14 per cent of the total emission.
Buildings
- Emission from this sector comes from fuel used for cooking purpose at homes or for burning purpose in buildings.
- This sector contributes 6 per cent of the total emission.
Other Energy
- Other sources which are not covered above contributes 10 per cent of the total emission.
