English Exercise on Tricks of Adverb

Dear Aspirants

Here in this article, we are providing an English Exercise on Tricks of Adverb based on our English Master Series Module -15. 

This Exercise will be very helpful while solving the questions of Spotting Errors and Fill in the blanks.

 

EXERCISE

1. He danced/ in the city hall /well last night./ No error.

2. I used to often/ take a break from /my packed schedule./ No error.

3. She asked him/ to carefully write/ the answer. / No error.

4. Raman is /absolutely /quite alone. / No error.

5. Seldom /she meets/ her friends./ No error.

6. He hujed to finish / the work in the last week / but in fact / he could not. / No error.

7. My neighbour along with / his children /are going to see /the Taj Mahal at Agra. / No error.

8. His ability to / talk to strangers / is one of his /stronger points. / No error.

9. Soon after their child / was born he /went of leaving /her in the lurch. / No error.

10. By virtue of the provisions of the by-laws  /he has to take on as  / chairman of the committee  / with effect from the first of the next month./ No error.

SOLUTION

1. He danced well in the city hall last night.

Explanation – The normal order is—adverb of manner, adverb of place, adverb of time.

2. I often used to take a break from my packed schedule.

Explanation –The adverbs of frequency and quantity should be placed before the auxiliaries have to and used to.

3. She asked him to write the answer carefully.

Explanation – An adverb is not used by splitting an infinitive.

4. Raman is quite alone.

Explanation – No adverb is used before quite. 

5. Seldom does she meet her friends.

Explanation – Inverted form of verb  is used in the sentences starting with seldom.

6. He hujed to finish  the work  last week  but in fact he could not.

7. My neighbour along with  his children is going to see the Taj Mahal at Agra.

8. His ability to  talk to strangers  is one of his strong points.

9. Soon after their child  was born he went away leaving  her in the lurch.

10. By virtue of the provisions of the by-laws  he has to take over as chairman of the committee   with effect from the first of the next month.
