1. Axis Bank launches India’s first certified green bond at London Stock Exchange

  • Axis Bank has launched India’s first internationally-listed certified green bond to finance climate change solutions around the world at London Stock Exchange.
  • The proceeds of the bond will be invested by Axis Bank in green energy, transportation and infrastructure projects.
  • The green bonds of Axis Bank were certified by the Climate Bonds Standards Board.

Know about Green Bonds:

  • Green Bonds basically are debt instruments which help issuer to get capital while the investors receive fixed income in the form of interest.
  • In the case of Green Bonds, the issuer gets capital from the investors only if the investment (capital) is being raised to fund green projects relating to renewable energy or emission reductions etc.

2. Centre announces new print media advertisement policy

  • Information and Broadcasting ministry has framed a New Print Media Advertisement Policy for Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity (DAVP) with the objective to promote transparency and accountability in issuing of advertisements in print media.
  • First time the policy introduces a New Marking System for newspapers to incentive Newspapers who have better professional standing and get their circulation verified by ABC and RNI.
  • The DAVP is the nodal agency of the Government of India for advertising on behalf of various Ministries and Departments which are funded by the government.
  • The policy has classified newspaper and journals into three categories namely small, that is up to 25,000 copies, medium between 25,001 and 75,000 copies and big, 75,000 copies or more, per publishing day.

3. SBI, Spain's CaixaBank ink pact to fund Indo-Spanish JVs, local business

  • State Bank of India (SBI) and Spain's CaixaBank have inked pact to provide loans to Indo-Spanish joint ventures and local enterprises.
  • As per the agreement, they will expand banks' guarantee transaction businesses by jointly providing credit to Indian-Spanish joint ventures and Indian local enterprises.
  • The banks will also cooperate through introduction of business opportunities and partnering on possible infrastructure funds.
  • The agreement was signed by CaixaBank's Executive Vice-President, International Banking, Victoria Matia and SBI's Chief General Manager Sujit Kumar Varma.


  • CaixaBank had established its representative office in New Delhi in 2011.
  • It offers business counseling and helps Spanish companies to develop their business in the South Asian region and Indian companies with interest in Spain.

4.  Former Kerala assembly speaker T S John passes away


  • Former Kerala assembly speaker T S John (74-year) has passed away at a hospital at Chertala in Alapuzha.
  • He was suffering from old age related ailments.
  • John had served as a minister in the A K Antony cabinet.
  • He was a lawyer by profession and became an active member of students movements.
  • He was one of the founder members of Kerala Congress and was elected to the assembly from Kalooppara constituency four times.

5. Suresh Prabhu flags off Champaran Satyagrah Express train in Bihar

  • In Bihar, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has flagged off Champaran Satyagrah Express train at a function in Motihari. 
  • This train will run between Bapudham, Motihari to Anand Vihar, Delhi. 
  • The Minister also inaugurated Banmankhi - Purnea rail section and Pipraha Railway Station.
  • Mr. Prabhu also inaugurated road over bridges at Motihar, Begusarai and Danapur through video conferencing.

6. Madhya Pradesh BJP MLA Rajendra dadu dies in car accident


  • Madhya Pradesh, ruling BJP MLA Rajendra Dadu (62-years) died in a road accident.
  • His vehicle suffered an accident on the Bhopal-Indore road in Sherpura vicinity on the outskirts of Sehore district.
  • This was his second consecutive term as MLA of Nepanagar in Burhanpur district.
  • He was going Indore to attend a BJP Legislature Party meeting.

7. Four elements on the Periodic Table get new names 


  • The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) has announced the names proposed for the new elements, whose discovery helped complete the seventh row of the Periodic Table in December last year.
  • These elements discovered by teams in Japan, Russia and the US, which submitted names to governing body IUPAC.
  • The names proposed for the elements with atomic numbers 113, 115, 117 and 118 were Nihonium (Nh), Moscovium (Mc), Tennessine (Ts) and Oganesson (Og) respectively.
  • The new names will now undergo a five-month public review to allow for any potential objections, meaning they could officially join the periodic table by the end of this year.

8. Akhil Sharma wins Dublin International literary award


  • An Indian American author Mr. Akhil Sharma has won the prestigious 2016 International Dublin Literary Award for his novel 'family life'.
  • The Award is organised and sponsored by Dublin City Council and at €100,000 is the world’s largest prize for a single novel published in English.
  • The winning novel was chosen from a total of 160 titles, nominated by libraries in 118 cities in 43 countries.
  • He is the third American author to win the prize in its 21-year history.
  • Sharma is also the author of An Obedient Father, winner of the PEN/Hemingway Award and a New York Times Notable Book of the Year.

9. MTNL chairman Narendra Yadav steps down


  • Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) has announced that its Chairman and Managing Director, Narendra Kumar Yadav has resigned.
  • Now for the timing, Director (finance) P K Purwar has been given additional charge of the CMD's post.
  • At the end of March 2016, the company had 3,56,085 wireless subscribers and 3,504,088 wireline users. 


  • Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) is a state-owned telecommunications service provider in the metro cities of Mumbai and New Delhi in India and in the island nation of Mauritius in Africa.
  • The Government of India currently holds 100% stake in the company.

10. Tata Power Solar bagged the MNRE award


  • Tata Power Solar has bagged the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) award for rooftop solar power projects.
  • The company has won the award in the Channel Partner/EPC contractor category at the National Excellence Awards 2016 instituted by MNRE for the first time.
  • As per MNRE, the awards are presented to encourage efficiency and give positive feedback to various government bodies as well as private sector.
  • The Tata Power Solar has commissioned 112.5 MW of rooftop projects till 2016.
  • Recently, MNRE announced a 30 per cent subsidy for all residential and non-profit organisations installing rooftop solar.

11. Google and Tata's 'Internet Saathi' initiative launches in West Bengal


  • Internet search engine Google and Tata Trusts’ joint initiative "Internet Saathi"  has been launched in Kolkata, West Bengal.
  • The initiative aims at reducing the digital gender gap in rural areas of India such as Purulia, where girls have now been trained to use the Internet and teach others in turn.
  • In the last ten months, the initiative has been active in villages across five states in India, namely Rajasthan, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

 12. Euro 2016 begins tonight in France


  • Europe's paramount soccer tournament, Euro 2016, begins tonight in France, with the hosts taking on Romania in a Group 'A' game at the Stade de France, the national stadium on the northern outskirts of Paris.
  • 24-teams will vie for the supremacy in European football, during the one month-long marathon. 
  • The host country, who were winners in 1984 and 2000 will carry the hopes of a nation still coming to terms with last year's militant attacks.
  • While defending champions Spain are seeking to make it a hat-trick, World Champion Germany will be targeting a first Euro title in 20 years.
  • Northern Ireland, Albania, Iceland, Slovakia and Wales are all appearing for the first time in the tournament.
