Mind Map For Evolutionary Time Scale
The absolute ages of geological events are often determined by radiometric dating. It measures the decay of certain radioactive elements in minerals that form in igneous rock. Most of the eras and periods of the geological time scale were named and ordered before Darwin’s time. These geological eras and periods were distinguished by distinctive fossil taxa and are still most readily recognized in practice. The Cenozoic era embraces seven epochs, Paleocene through Holocene. The older literature refers to the first five epochs (66–2.58 Mya) as the Tertiary period, and to the Pleistocene and Holocene (or Recent) (2.58 Mya–present) as the Quaternary period. Geologists now recognize, instead, the Paleogene (Paleocene through Oligocene, 66–23 Mya), Neogene (Miocene through Pliocene, 23–2.58 Mya), and Quaternary periods. In general, the older the geological age, the less well it is represented in the fossil record because of erosion and metamorphism.
