IBPS Probationary Officers' Designation

The IBPS PO work profile includes holding the designation of an Assistant Manager (AM). This post comes under Junior Management Grade-1 (JMG-Scale 1) Officer and is also called Scale 1 Officer or Asst. Manager. 

Initial Posting of IBPS Probationary Officer (PO)

  • Selected Probationary Officers go through an Induction Training Program in Management Training Academies of the Bank
  • The training lasts for 10 to 20 days and the duration of training varies from bank to bank. 
  • PO can be posted anywhere in India after completion of their induction training in Management Training Academies.
  • They are posted as an Asst. Manager on probation in different branches or Head Office or Corporate Office or Zonal Offices.
  • They may be posted in specialized branches like microstate branches, treasury Branches, etc. as per the placement policy of particular banks.

Duration of IBPS PO Probation Period

  • Usually, the probation period of PO is two years.
  • During the probation period, the officer is exposed to various aspects of the Banking sector and its work.
  • In some banks, the duration of the probation period may be limited to one year.
  • In some banks, the Probation period is divided into phases which vary from bank to bank.

Example: In Indian Bank, the Probation period is divided in;

Ist Phase- 6 months,
IInd Phase-6 months and
IIIrd Phase- 1 year.

  • The officers under probation period may undergo frequent transfers or deputations.
  • Once the probation period is completed the officer is confirmed as an Assistant Manager and gets his or her permanent posting.

Role of Probationary Officers (PO) in Banks

IBPS POs are capable young officers who have plenty of potential and a great zeal and passion towards achieving their goals. Here is a list of characteristics of an IBPS PO job profile-

1. Multitasking Job:

  • A POs job is a multi-tasking job and they are assigned for various banking activities.
  • This helps them to get familiar with various working procedures of the banking industry.

2. Practical knowledge: 

  • POs are trained in various fields such as Marketing, Accounting, Loans & Advances as well as Finance.

3. Customer services: 

  • Often POs are required to handle the customers of the banks.
  • PO guides them about the banking facilities and products available for them like issuing of Cheque books, ATM cards, Demand Draft, etc.
  • Customer complaints like discrepancies in accounts, the rectification of undue charges are also handled by Probationary Officer.

4. Supervision of Clerical work: 

  • PO supervises all the clerical work such as managing cash, opening account,s and customer dealing.
  • In the case of cash transactions, PO is responsible to check whether the Clerk entered everything correctly and approve the transactions.

5. Loan Processing: 

  • One of the major functions of the bank i.e. providing a loan to the needful is also taken care of by a PO.
  • PO does all the documentation under his/her supervision before granting the loan to the customer. 

At last, a probationary officer works in various departments of the bank. It can be Deposits, Loans & Advances, Clearing, Pensions, Payment and Cheque clearances, Fixed deposits, ATM and Internet Banking, Credit Card, Report Making, etc.
