Context:

President Raam Nath Kovind virtually inaugurated the dhamma chakra Day celebration.

Background:

  • All the events in the life of Lord Buddha are related to the full moon - Birth, enlightenment, religious preaching and Mahaparinirvana.
  • On this day, Mahatma Buddha gave the first sermon to his first five disciples. On this occasion, Buddhists from all over the world celebrate it every year as the Dharma Chakra enforcement day.
  • At the same time, in Hinduism, it is the day to make rules to be respectful towards Guru; it is also celebrated as Guru Poornima.

 Details

  • On this occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the countrymen through video, saying that Buddhism teaches people to respect them.
  • Respect for people, Respect for poor, Respect for women, Respect for peace and non-violence; Therefore, the learning given by Buddha is relevant even today.
  • Gautama Buddha, in his first sermon, in Sarnath and in later days, also talked about two things - hope and purpose because only hope creates purpose.
  • When Buddha become enlightened, he started to give sermons.
  • In the first sermon to the People, he talked about four Noble Truths.
  • At that time, PM also presented the Buddhist text, Mongolian Buddhist monasteries, which is also related to the Indo-Mongolian Culture.
  • Buddhism mostly spread in Asian Countries.
  • In ancient India, many monks come to India for the Knowledge of Buddhism by Silk Route; they came to know about the importance of Buddhism and teachings.
