Onam is one of the biggest festivals celebrated by Malayalis. The festival is said to commemorate the great King Mahabali who is known as the legendary king associated with Onam. The festival is often known as the homecoming of the great, generous king.

King Mahabali was a demon king who was very generous and just. He was also a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. There was a time when he ruled all three worlds which worried other Gods. Lord Vishnu then went to him as a Brahaman and knowing his generosity, asked him to give him the land which he can cover in three paces. Mahabali agreed to it. Lord Vishnu covered all the three worlds in two paces and for the third pace, Mahabali offered him his head. Lord Vishnu touched by his gesture, gave him the boon to return to the earth once every year.

Thus, his return every year to the earth is celebrated as the festival Onam. It is celebrated with great joy and various activities take place to celebrate King Mahabali and the harvest.
