Disasters that Belong to Category of Nuclear Disasters

The International Atomic Energy Agency describes a nuclear and radiation accident as “a situation that had serious effects on people, the environment, or the facility. Examples include irreversible harm to people, significant radioactive release into the environment, and reactor core meltdown.”

Fukushima Disaster

This nuclear disaster happened in 2011 at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in Ōkuma, Fukushima, Japan. The details pertaining to it can be read below:

The cause of this disaster was the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami that occurred on 11 March 2011.
It was the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in Japan.
Tōhoku earthquake stirred up a powerful tsunami with 13–14 meter high waves that damaged the nuclear power plant.

Chernobyl Disaster

Chernobyl disaster occurred on26 April 1986 at a reactor in the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, in the north of the Ukrainian SSR in the Soviet Union. Some key points related to this disaster are:

It is one of the two nuclear disasters that caused maximum severity.
The accident happened at the time of safety testing to determine the ability of the steam turbine.
The explosion is so huge that it melted the reacted core.

Three-mile Island Incident

It was a partial meltdown of the Three Mile Island, the reactor in Pennsylvania, United States. More information related to this incident has been presented below:

The accident happened due to the failure of the non-nuclear secondary system.
It was followed by the stuck-open pilot-operated relief valve in the primary system.
