The Aim of the Rowlatt Act was to curtail the fundamental rights of Indian citizens. The Rowlatt Acts are legislation passed by the Imperial Legislative Council, the legislature of British India. These acts allowed some political cases to be heard by no jury and to house suspects without trial. Their goal was to replace the punitive provisions of the Defense of India War Act and the Permanent Rights.

The Rowlatt Act was passed in response to what the government believed to be a threat from revolutionary nationalists to engage in similar plots to those that had taken place during the war if the Defense of India Act were to expire. The major objective was to suppress the political movements and activities of the Indians.

The Rowlatt Act, sometimes known as the “Black Act,” was enacted by the British government in 1919, amid the height of the First World War. He was given the Sir Sidney Rowlatt Committee Chairman’s name.
