  • Ideological nationalism: Each nation should govern itself, without outside interference, the nation is the natural and ideal basis of polity, and the nation is the only legitimate source of political power.
  • Pan-nationalism: A form of nationalism that seeks to transcend traditional boundaries and basic national identities to create a “higher” national identity based on various common denominators.
  • Diaspora nationalism: A type of nationalism that functions as a “ghost base” for people who want to experience national connection but do not want to leave their diasporic community.
