In terms of rice production, India ranks second in the world. China is the world’s largest rice producer. It is a staple food in India’s eastern and southern regions, requiring temperatures around 25 degrees Celsius and more than 100 cm of precipitation. Rice production expanded from 53.6 million tons in 1980 to 120 million tons in 2020-21.

There are a few states in India where production rates are higher due to adequate water and soil availability. West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, and Tamil Nadu are the top five rice-producing states in India.
India is the leading exporter of Basmati rice to the global market. Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Delhi, Uttarakhand, and Western Uttar Pradesh are the states that grow the most Basmati rice.
