Mineral resources are defined as the concentration or occurrence of economically valuable minerals in or on the Earth’s crust. Mineral resources are the primary material foundation for socioeconomic growth. According to statistics, mineral resources provide more than 95% of the energy used by humans, 80% of the raw materials used in industry, and 70% of the raw materials used in agricultural production.

Uses of Mineral Resources

How minerals are used is determined by their deposits. Some countries have abundant mineral deposits, while others do not.

  • The properties of minerals determine how they should be used.
  • Aluminum, for example, is used in the aircraft, shipping, and automobile industries because it is lightweight, strong, and long-lasting.
  • Minerals are used in almost every industry. Gold, silver, and platinum are used in the jewelry industry, while copper is used to make pipes, cables, and coins. Silicon, which is used in the computer industry, is produced by quartz.
  • The mineral components in fireworks give them their color. Strontium creates dark reds, copper creates blues, zinc creates salt, and barium creates shiny greens.
  • Strontium and sodium combine to create a bright orange color; titanium, zirconium, and magnesium alloys have silvery white; copper and strontium have a lavender blue color.

Examples of Mineral Resources

  • Compounds created naturally on Earth are known as minerals, and their structure and chemical makeup are apparent.
  • More than 3000 minerals are known to exist. Some are uncommon and priceless, like gold and diamonds, while others, like quartz, are more commonplace.
  • As with all substances, minerals are made up of atoms. Simply put, they are the foundation for everything we are.
  • They can be found either in their pure state or mixed chemically with other constituents of compounds. Two or more elements that are chemically bonded together make up a compound.
