The rock which is made up of molten magma is Igneous. Igneous rock or Magmatic rock is made up of the cooling and solidification of lava. Magma is obtained by the partial melting of present rocks in the earth’s crust. Magma can be derived from partial melts of existing rocks in Earth’s crust. The melting is caused by one or more of three processes: a rise in temperature, a drop in pressure, or a change in composition. Solidification into rock occurs either below the surface as intrusive rocks or on the surface called extrusive rocks.

Formation of Rock from Molten Magma
When the magma or molten rock cools down and crystallizes then it leads to the formation of igneous rocks. Magma is developed in the lower crust or upper mantle due to extreme heat. The composition and structure of igneous rocks vary a lot after they cool down. For example, two rocks from the same magma can be formed as granite or rhyolite. Igneous rocks are categorized into two main categories that are, Extrusive and Intrusive igneous rocks. Here is a brief about the two types of igneous rocks:
- Extrusive igneous rocks: These rocks are formed on the Earth’s surface from lava. The extrusive igneous rocks are small crystals since they cool very quickly. Eg. Pumice, Basalt, Tuff, etc.
- Intrusive igneous rocks: Such rocks crystallize inside the earth’s surface, i.e. in the crust. Thus, the formation of rocks is in large crystals as the cooling takes place slowly. Intrusive rocks are also called plutonic rocks. Diorite, pegmatite and granite, and are examples of intrusive igneous rocks.
