Need of Skill India Mission

  • As per the study of NSDC (Skill Development Council), there will be a need for around 12 crores of skilled manpower across 24 sectors by 2022.
  • Casual workers who contribute 90% of the labor force are poorly skilled, and they need adequate training. The ongoing upskilling programs don’t satisfy their needs.
  • To stay relevant in the market, people need to constantly upgrade their skills, and it becomes a big challenge for them.
  • The current institutes lack infrastructure.

Sub Schemes under Skill India Mission

The Skill India Mission is an umbrella mission that has multiple schemes under it with specialized focus areas. National Skill Development Mission (NSDM)- This mission was launched to create an end-to-end framework that would boost the sustainable livelihoods of the citizens and align them with the needs of potential employers.

  • Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) – This scheme aims to encourage the young population of the country to take training and make them ready for industry-relevant demands.
  • PM-YUVA – this is related to entrepreneurship training and education.
  • Skill Loan Scheme – This scheme gives loans ranging from INR 5000 to 1-5 lakhs for those who want to join skill development programs.
  • Other schemes – the ministry implements various schemes in the skill development domain like the ones we have mentioned above. One of the examples is Pradhan Mantri Yuva Udyamita Vikas Abhiyan (PM-YUVA).
