Pneumatic bones are found in the class of Aves. The bones of birds are called Pneumatic bones because they are hollow and lighter in weight than those of mammals. The term pneumatic is derived from the Greek prefix pneumo which means “breath” or “lung”. The tibia, femur, pubic bone, ribs, ulna, toe bones, and scapula are among these bones.

Where are Pneumatic Bones Found?

Numerous air cells are present in these vertebral bones, which are found there. Some of the hollow bones function as a component of the respiratory system in birds. Compared to mammals, birds have a more effective respiratory system.

It is large because the respiratory system takes up one-fifth of a bird’s body volume. Mammals’ respiratory systems, on the other hand, make up only a twentieth of their total body volume. Pneumatic bones are important for increasing the efficiency of the bird’s respiratory system and for its flight.

  • Pneumatic bones, which are air-filled hollow bones, are typically found in birds or Aves.
  • It reduces the weight of the skeleton, which makes flying easier.
  • The skull, humerus, clavicle, keel, pelvic girdle, and lumbar and sacral vertebrae are examples of pneumatic bones.
  • The medullary bones are additional crucial bones in the avian skeleton.
  • Pneumatic bones are found throughout the skeleton of birds, not just in the skull.
  • Buoyancy is a term used to describe a body’s ability to float or rise in a fluid (liquid or gas).
  • Birds can float freely on air thanks to their hollow bones and feathers, which trap air, increase buoyancy, and allow for airtight seals.
