India’s petrochemical or crude oil processing industry has a capacity of over 194 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). India is home to the largest refinery in the world, which has a 32 MTPA capacity. There are several complexes with cracking units that have downstream facilities for making 8 MTPA plastics and polymers.

A petrochemical is any chemical manufactured from crude oil and natural gas distinct from fuels and used for various commercial purposes. Ethylene, butylenes, propylene, toluene, benzene, and xylene are the six fundamental petrochemicals that are used to make lightweight automobile bumpers, bicycle helmets, medical gadgets, space suits, and wind turbines.

Benzene, ethylene, propylene, and xylene are examples of petrochemicals. Intermediates including PAN, MEG, LAB, and others are other components.
Synthetic rubbers like PBR and SBR, synthetic fibres like PFY and PSF, PVC, polymers like LDPE/HDPE, Nylon, Polyester, and PET,
The sector has significant growth potential. Although petrochemical products’ current per capita consumption is low, demand for them is growing.
India produces 21 MTPA of urea; and has the broadest range of chemicals such as soda ash (2.7 MTPA), caustic soda (2.4 MTPA), sulfuric acid, Dyes and dye intermediates, and fine chemicals.
