Modern Adaptations of Traditional Rainwater Harvesting Methods to Conserve and Store Water
Traditional rainwater harvesting methods are still popular and are being adapted for reusing rainwater in the modern era. Rainwater harvesting is the best way to meet the water demand in water-scarce areas.
In places like Rajasthan and Mysore, rainwater is collected from rooftops and collected in tanks. Also, in places like Meghalaya, Shillong, etc., centuries-old rainwater harvesting methods are used to meet the water demand.
Methods used to Conserve Rainwater in India
Here are some of the methods that are commonly used to conserve rainwater in India:
- Rooftop rainwater harvesting: Rainwater collected on rooftops is collected through pipes into a tank. In Meghalaya and Shillong, 15-20% of water requirements are met through this system. This system is practised in Rajasthan as well.
- Bamboo drip system: In Meghalaya, the 200-year-old bamboo drip system is used where bamboo pipes are used to collect rainwater to reuse it.
- Underground rainwater harvesting: Underground tanks are created to store rainwater in places like Rajasthan.
- Percolation ponds: These are constructed across a natural water body to store the runoffs from the catchment area.
