The Padmashree, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan are three of the most important awards conferred by the Indian Government on Indian civilians. Interestingly, these awards were constituted in 1954 as a three-tier Padma award program alongside the Bharat Ratna. The three tiers were - Pahela Varg, Dusra Varg, and Teesra Varg. These names were later changed into Padmashree, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan in the next year - January 8, 1955 - following a Presidential Notification. The award ceremony is held together with the Bharat Ratna Award every year in March or April at the Rashtrapati Bhawan, New Delhi.
