Explanation

Relation of Speed, Time and Distance

The fundamental formula for Speed Time and Distance is Distance = Speed x Time.

This further means, Speed = Distance/ Time and Time = Distance/ Speed.

Units

1)      The Unit of Speed is m/sec or km/h.

2)      The Unit of time is the second or minute or hour.

3)      The Unit of Distance is meter or kilometre.

Average Speed

1)      When any moving body travels different distances at different speeds then average speed formula is used,

Average Speed = Total Distance/ Total Time.

Relative Speed

1)      When two moving bodies are moving in the same direction then the relative speed will be, if u > v, u-v and if v > u, v-u.

2)      When two moving bodies are moving in the opposite direction, the relative speed will be, v + u.

Tips and Tricks to Solve Speed, Time and Distance Questions

While solving the multiple voice questions you have minimum time to tick the correct option. If the question is related to unit conversion then you can rely on this trick:

km/h = 5/18 m/s

m/s = 18/5 km/h

While solving sums where distance is constant and time is not constant:

Average speed = n/ ( 1/s1 + 1/s2 + ……..1/s3 )

While solving sums where time is constant and distance is not constant:

Average speed = s1 + s2 + s3 +.........sn / n

  1. If you fail to understand any sum then define it in your mind; you have to be specific while solving these sums.
  2. Repeat certain questions in your mind while solving like, what is done, when it is done, with whom it is done, and what is the sequence of work done. If you can answer these questions to yourself then you will certainly understand the way of solving it.
