What is "cut off" in a competitive exam?

  • The cut off mark is the mark set by the authority or panel that administers an exam as the passing or clearing level of the exam.
  • Candidates are shortlisted for the next stages of the selection process based on the cut off.
  • Cut off varies for different from exam to exam, it varies on the availability of vacancies and the level of competition, for example, if 10 people are writing an examination to become a clerk in a bank but the total vacancy is 2, the bank needs to eliminate some candidates and retain a few for the next level of selection, say an interview, so they set a cut off that is probably an above average mark for the exam conducted, thereby eliminating a few low scorers & selecting others for an interview.
