Candidates who wish to take the exam must be familiar with the eligibility parameters so that they do not face any difficulty while applying for the exam. You must note that the admission criteria is different to get into an M.Tech or a job at PSU. Qualifying for the GATE Electrical Engineering exam does not guarantee you a job or admission as qualifying for GATE EE is a pre-requisite. The candidate should be an Indian National to apply for the exam. However, foreign nationals belonging to Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Ethiopia, and United Arab Emirates (U.A.E) can also apply for the exam for electrical engineering.

The candidate must be in the third or final year of Engineering/ Technology.

GATE EE Eligibility Criteria for International Candidates

The GATE Electrical Engineering eligibility criteria for international students belonging to Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Nepal, Singapore, Sri Lanka, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are as follows:

  • International students must have obtained or must be pursuing their qualifying degree.
  • Such candidates must be in their 3rd year or higher years or completed their Bachelor’s Degree of at least 3 years duration in Engineering / Technology / Science / Arts / Commerce.

Professional Societies Conducting Examination Equivalent to B.E./B.Tech

Some of the Professional Societies/Institutions conduct engineering exams as mentioned below.

  • The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE)
  • The Institution of Engineers (India) (IE)
  • The Aeronautical Society of India (AeSI)
  • The Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE)
  • The Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers, including Polymer and Environmental Group (IIChemE)
  • The Indian Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE)
  • The Indian Institute of Metals (IIM)

Candidates who possess certification from any one of the professional societies must make sure that the exams are approved by MoE/ AICTE/ UGC/ UPSC as equivalent to B.E./ B.Tech./ B.Arch./ B.Planning, etc.

Documents Required for GATE EE Eligibility

Candidates appearing for the exam will be required to upload documents that we have listed below to support their GATE eligibility criteria for Electrical Engineering. 

  • Caste Certificate (SC/ ST), if applicable
  • A person with Disability (PwD) certificate, if applicable
  • Certificate of Dyslexia, if applicable
  • Photograph and signature
  • Provisional Certificate Letter (as issued by the Head of the Institute/Dean/Registrar/Head of Department) 
  • Degree certificate/provisional degree certificate/course completion certificate/membership certificate as issued by the designated authorities.

GATE EE Eligibility Criteria FAQs

  • The GATE EE eligibility criteria 2023 consist of candidates in third or higher years of the qualifying degree. There is no fixed age limit or number of attempts for the candidates to apply for the examination. 

  • As per the new changes introduced by the conducting authority, candidates who have successfully completed their 10+2+2 or 10+3+1 are eligible to apply for the Electrical Engineering examination. 

  • As per the GATE EE eligibility criteria 2023, the candidates belonging to the SC/ST/PwD candidates have to upload the caste certificate while applying for the examination. 

  • Based on the GATE eligibility criteria for Electrical Engineering, foreign nationals belonging to Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Ethiopia, and United Arab Emirates (U.A.E) are eligible for the examination.

  • According to the GATE EE eligibility criteria, there is no age limit to apply for the electrical engineering examination. Candidates can appear for the examination at any age.
