AFCAT Selection Process is set by the Indian Air Force which is the official recruitment conducting body for the Air Force Common Admission Test exam. Also, IAF follows a straightforward and unbiased AFCAT selection procedure to recruit candidates for the commissioned officer vacancies.
AFCAT Selection Process 2022 is divided into 3 different stages and the candidates are required to crack each stage to grab the desired seat in various departments like - Flying Branch (Pilot), Ground Duty Technical (Electrical, Mechanical), Ground Duy Non-Technical (Administration, Logistics). AFCAT Selection Process 2022

The AFCAT Selection Process 2022 consists of an online examination which is followed by the Air Force Selection Board (AFSB) interview. The candidates who qualify for the AFCAT written exam receive the call letter for the AFSB interview. Candidates who are recommended in the AFSB interview are required to undergo a Medical examination. After this, a merit list is prepared by IAF for the AFCAT Selection Process and candidates will be called for the training in the Air Force Academy.

Candidates are selected through AFCAT purely based on a merit-based procedure. Not only do candidates have to show Officers like Qualities (OLQ’s) but they also have to match the medical standards of the Indian Air Force. The AFCAT selection process 2022 selection board scrutinizes all the aspects of a candidate’s aptitude, psychology, personality, and knowledge, and only the candidate meets the standards of IAF.

AFCAT Selection Process 2022 - Branch-wise

AFCAT selection process has been divided into 4 stages. The Computer Based Test (CBT) will be common for all the Technical and Non-Technical Posts. It is divided into 4 sections which are, General Awareness, Verbal Ability, Reasoning & Military Aptitude Test, and Numerical Ability. A total of 100 questions will be there carrying a weightage of 3 marks each. Check out the table given below. 

The AFCAT Selection process is almost similar for all three branches with slight variations in AFCAT Ground Duty Technical Selection Process

  • AFCAT Ground Duty (Non-Technical Selection Process): Online Exam, followed by Interview and Medical Test
  • AFCAT Selection Process for Ground Duty Technical: Online exam is followed by Engineering Knowledge Test (EKT). Selected candidates then appear for interview and medical.

AFCAT Selection Process Step 1-  Notification 

Indian Air Force releases the official AFCAT Notification announcing the AFCAT Exam along with other details such as application, important dates, etc. Candidates who are interested must fill out the AFCAT application 2022 before the last date. It is important to check the AFCAT Eligibility before applying.

  • For all entries except NDA and CDSE for all branches, candidates have to go through the AFCAT.
  • Advertisements for AFCAT is released in the month of June and December.
  • AFCAT is conducted by Indian Air Force (IAF) all across India.

AFCAT Selection Process Step 2 - AFCAT Exam 2022

The AFCAT Exam is a Computer Based Exam which is conducted by Indian Air Force. The time limit of this test is 2 Hours in which candidates have to answer objective-type questions. It will be held in different cities and only those candidates who appear for the written exam can be qualified for the next round.

AFCAT Selection Process Step 3- AFSB Interview

The successful candidates of Step- I, receive a Call letter and have to report to one of the Air Force Selection Boards located at Dehradun, Varanasi, Gandhinagar, and Mysuru. At the Air Force Selection Board (AFSB), candidates are tested to check their suitability and potential as an Officer in the Indian Air Force.

Stage I Testing

Stage-I is a screening test. Successful candidates of Stage-I go further for Stage-II testing.

Stage-I disqualified candidates are routed back after the announcement of Stage I results.

Stage II Testing

All Stage-I qualified candidates are tested by the following tests for the next four to five days.

Note: The fifth day is for the Computerised Pilot Selection System Testing (Flying branch).

  1. Psychological Tests consist of written tests that are conducted by a Psychologist.
  2. Group Tests consist of interactive indoor and outdoor activities that are a combination of mental and physical work.
  3. The interview involves a personal conversation with a Senior Officer.
  4. Candidates who are recommended for the flying branch have to undergo a Computerised Pilot Selection System (CPSS) test.

AFCAT Selection Process Step 4 - Medical Examination

  • These tests will be explained to the candidates in detail at the Selection Board.
  • The recommended candidates are sent either to the Air Force Central Medical Establishment (AFCME), New Delhi, or the Institute of Aviation Medicine, Bengaluru for the medical examination.

AFCAT Selection Process Step 5 - All India Merit List

After conducting all the stages, the IAF releases the final merit list on the basis of the overall performance of the candidates. In order to prepare the final merit list, the officials consider the following factors:

The Indian Air Force recruits the candidates on the basis of the final merit list. The final merit list for AFCAT 2 will be released after the successful conduction of all the stages of AFCAT Selection Process. The shortlisted candidates will be selected on the basis of their final scores and the availability of vacancies in different branches of the AFCAT.
After getting selected, the candidates will have to undergo training for 74 weeks if they have applied for Flying and Ground Duty (Technical) Branches and 52 weeks for Ground Duty (Non-technical) Branches.

  • AFCAT is conducted twice a year by the officials of the Indian Air Force. Because it is a huge process and it takes time to conduct because the number of candidates appearing for AFCAT Exam is only increasing every year.

  • There is no limitation to appearing for the AFCAT exam until and unless the candidates fulfill the eligibility criteria. Acandidates age should be between 20 to 24 and he can almost take the AFCAT Exam for 16 times before he crosses the age limit criteria.

  • The final selection process for the non-technical branch is the release of the merit list. If the candidates' name is on the merit list then they have cracked the AFCAT Exam.
