Hierarchy of Police Department in India - The Selection Process

The primary purpose of releasing the list of the best Police Departments in India is to acknowledge the efforts put in by the police personnel in maintaining law and order in their jurisdiction and to foster a competitive spirit. The rankings help the government and the stakeholders to understand the techniques required to improve the functioning of the police department and offer better service.

The ranking process started after Prime Minister Narendra Modi directed the Directors General of Police in 2015 to rank or grade police stations after evaluating their performance.

In the first round, three police stations were selected from states with over 750 police stations, two police stations were selected from Delhi and other states, and one police station was selected from each Union Territory. A total of 75 police stations moved to the next round. Each police station was evaluated on nineteen (19) different parameters before finding a place on the list of the Top 10 Police Departments in India.

The Police Departments in India help the citizens and the government understand the service standards of the police department. It plays a critical role in improving the quality of service and making the police department more citizen-friendly.
