The number of districts in Tamilnadu has changed many times in the previous years. Currently, the total number of districts in the state is 38. The latest district to the state was added in 2020. Since then, no new district has been created in Tamil Nadu. We have shared a brief about the history of Tamil Nadu districts here
- On 5 January 2018, the border area of the Chennai district was increased.
- On 22 November 2019, Tenkasi district was bifurcated from Tirunelveli.
- On 26 November 2019, Kallakurichi district was bifurcated from Viluppuram district.
- On 29 November 2019, Tirupattur and Ranipet districts were trifurcated from the Vellore district of Tamil Nadu.
- On 30 November 2019, Chengalpattu district was bifurcated from Kanchipuram.
- On 24 March 2020, Mayiladuthurai district was bifurcated from Nagapattinam district.
