Tamil Nadu Districts: The southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu was formed in 1956 with 13 districts. The state covers a total area of 130,058 square kilometres and has a total population of 72,147,030. Tamil Nadu is divided into several administrative districts and other subdivisions. Currently, the total number of Tamil Nadu districts is 38.

The number of districts in Tamil Nadu is 38. Each of these districts is headed by an officer of the Indian Administrative Service. The number of districts in Tamilnadu has changed many times in the previous years. Currently, the total number of districts in the state is 38. The latest district to the state was added in 2020. Since then, no new district has been created in Tamil Nadu. We have shared a brief about the history of Tamil Nadu districts here

  • On 5 January 2018, the border area of the Chennai district was increased.
  • On 22 November 2019, Tenkasi district was bifurcated from Tirunelveli.
  • On 26 November 2019, Kallakurichi district was bifurcated from Viluppuram district.
  • On 29 November 2019, Tirupattur and Ranipet districts were trifurcated from the Vellore district of Tamil Nadu.
  • On 30 November 2019, Chengalpattu district was bifurcated from Kanchipuram.
  • On 24 March 2020, Mayiladuthurai district was bifurcated from Nagapattinam district.
