Sikkim District: Sikkim is a landlocked state in the northeastern part of India. Covering a total area of 7,096 square kilometres, Sikkim is among the smallest states in India. Sikkim is divided into 6 districts and 16 subdivisions. All districts of Sikkim have their own District Magistrate and Sub-Divisional Magistrate.

Earlier, there were only 4 districts in Sikkim. However, in December 2021, the Sikkim Government announced the creation of 2 more districts. We have shared the names of all the Sikkim districts here.

How Many Districts in Sikkim?

There are a total of 6 Sikkim districts. The districts of the state are divided into many sub-divisions for ease of administration. Districts of Sikkim

The Indian state of Sikkim was earlier divided into four districts the four districts of East Sikkim, North Sikkim, South Sikkim and West Sikkim. These Sikkim districts were divided into 16 subdivisions. On 21 December 2021, the Sikkim government announced the formation of two new districts in Sikkim, Soreng and Pakyong.

Mangan (North Sikkim District)

Mangan was earlier known as the North Sikkim district. Covering an area of 4,226 square kilometres, Mangan is the largest district in the state. It is located at an elevation of 956 m and has a population of 43,354 people. The headquarters of the Mangan district are located in Mangan town.

Gangtok (East Sikkim District)

Earlier known as the East Sikkim district, Gangtok is the most popular region in Sikkim. It is also the capital city of the state. It is an ancient city which was once a pilgrimage site for Buddhists. Gangtok covers a total area of 954 square kilometres and is located at an elevation of 1,650 m. Gangtok is also the most populous Sikkim district, with total population being 281,293.

Gyalshing (West Sikkim District)

Gyalshing is one of the four original districts of Sikkim. This region covers an area of 1,166 and is situated on an elevation of 823 m. Gyalshing is a historically important region in Sikkim. It is also one of the most scenic places in the state. As per the 2011 population census, Gyalsing has an estimated population of 136,299.

Namchi (South Sikkim District)

Namchi was known as the South Sikkim District until December 2021, when the Sikkim government decided to rearrange the districts of Sikkim. Namchi is among the smallest districts of Sikkim, covering an area of only 750 square kilometres. The number of people living in this district is 146,742. In the Sikkimese language, the word “Namchi” means “Sky High”.

Pakyong

Pakyong is a new Sikkim district that was created on 21 December 2021. To create this district, the three former subdivisions of the East Sikkim district, namely, Pakyong Subdivision, Rangpo Subdivision and Rongli Subdivisions were merged. Covering an area of only 404 square kilometres, the Pakyong district is one of the smallest Sikkim district.

Soreng

Soreng is the second new district in the state of Sikkim. Covering an area of 293.22 square kilometres, the Soreng district is officially the smallest Sikkim district. The total number of people living in this district is 3,818. Sikkim was officially formed on 21 December 2021 through The Sikkim (re-Organization of District) Act, 2021.
