MPSC Exams: All You Need to Know

This article aims to let you all know the most critical aspects of the MPSC Exams before you decide to start preparing for them. MPSC is not a particular exam. It is an authority responsible for hiring administrative or government officials to work under the Maharashtra State government. Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) recruits officials every year based on the vacancies declared by the State government. Let us know in detail.

MPSC Exams: All You Need to Know

Various posts are filled under the Maharashtra State government through MPSC. Which posts would be made available and how many vacancies to fill, all these nitty grittiest are decided by the State Government? Maharashtra State Government instructs Maharashtra Public Service Commission for the same, and accordingly, MPSC releases notifications for filling up the enlisted vacancies and the number of posts.

Any aspirant when 21 years old or above is eligible to appear on any of the MPSC exams, and the maximum age limit is 38 years for General candidates and relaxation as per the existing rules. If you are still pursuing graduation, you can appear as an ‘appearing student’ to attempt the exam. If you are not a graduate while appearing Prelims, you can also appear in the exam, but for MPSC Mains, you must be a graduate. 

Note: It is a mandatory educational qualification to be a graduate.

If you prepare for the MPSC exam while pursuing graduation, the chances are that you would be able to get into the system at a very early stage. MPSC conducts two major exams – MPSC Civil Services Exam and MPSC Subordinate Exam. MPSC Civil Services has two stages of the exam- Prelims and Mains. On the other hand, MPSC Subordinate exams have only one exam, and on qualifying for that exam, you are directly called for the interview. 

Until 2019, there was no cap on the number of attempts for aspirants belonging to any of the categories, but from 2020 onwards, the number of attempts has been defined. MPSC has six attempts for General Candidates, 9 for OBC and unlimited for aspirants belonging to SC/ST. Many aspirants analyze and start moulding themselves according to the requisites of the exam. 

Once you have decided to be a civil servant, it is highly advisable to utilize the graduation phase to the fullest. It helps develop time management skills and other aspects related to the exam, such as exam pattern, time management etc. To fill the application form, a candidate needs to register on the official website of the MPSC. Once notification is declared, the application form can be filled.  

What can an aspirant do while pursuing graduation?

  • Once firm that you aspire to serve the nation by becoming a Class I or Class II officer, then it is recommended that you start pursuing at least 1 hour every day dedicatedly for MPSC.
  • Candidates can start their preparation with basic books. In this manner, basic concepts can be memorized well.
  • Also, start making notes only after 3-4 readings. The aim should be to jot down essential points also the confusing ones. Rest the same books can be revised quickly, and everything will appear organized in your memory.
  • Note making is a very skilful and vital activity of the MPSC preparation journey. If you adopt and develop insights on note-making from graduation days onwards, then it will be beneficial.

Which all exams are conducting through MPSC?

MPSC State Service Exam 

  • This is the most important exam; appearing this, you can become a Class I or Class II officer. 
  • This examination is held in three phases- Prelims, Mains and Interview.
  • This exam has one-third negative marking, i.e., on 3 wrongly attempted questions leads to deduction of 1 mark. 
  • In Prelims exam Paper II: CSAT paper also has negative marking except for the decision-making segment. 
  •  Due to negative marking, many aspirants find it difficult to crack it, but through systematic study and meticulous revision, it is possible to crack the exam with a good score.

PSI/STI/ASO exam

  • PSI- Police Sub inspector for the State Goverenment. STI means a candidate needs to work in the sales tax department. ASO works in various ministries of Maharashtra State.
  • All three posts are Class II and non-gazetted posts. Non-gazetted means every year, the government releases a gazette citing a list of officers; in this gazette, PSI/STI/ADO names are not there.
  • For all these exams, a common prelim exam needs to appear. It is also known as a subordinate exam, i.e., MPSC Subordinate Service Exam.
  • Tentatively, the advertisement is released in January month, and the exam is held during March month.
  • This exam is held in 2 stages- Prelims and Mains. Both the exams have 1/4th negative marking, i.e., if 4 questions are wrongly attempted, then one mark is lost.

Maharashtra Group ‘C’ Service Exam

  • In this exam, Clerical typist, Tax Assistant and Excise Inspector are included.
  • Like, the previous exam, this one is also a non-gazette exam. 
  • For this exam, two stages of exams are needed to be appeared by the candidates – Prelims and Mains.
  • 1/4h negative marking, i.e., four questions when attempted wrong, then one mark is deducted. 

Apart from this, many departmental exams are conducted. For medical and engineering as well, various exams are conducted by the Commission.  

General Advice

  • To appear for all the exams, nearly similar subjects are to be read for General Studies. The only difference is for each specific exam, the depth of each subject and the type of questions asked varies. 
  • For MPSC State Services, an in-depth study is required, but for MPSC Subordinate and Group C services exam, more comprehensive coverage is needed but not in-depth.
