The new state of Maharashtra was established on May 1, 1960. Initially, on May 1 1960, there were 26 districts in Maharashtra. Since then, 10 new districts have been created for administrative purposes, bringing the number of districts in the state to 36 by 2021. In today's article, we will look at general information about districts in Maharashtra.

Maharashtra Districts

  • In India, the state of Maharashtra is located in the western and central parts of the country. The state has a lengthy coastline (720 km) near the Arabian Sea.
  • Maharashtra came into existence on 1st May 1960; This day is celebrated as Maharashtra Day.
  • Maharashtra is the 2nd biggest state in India regarding population and third in the geographical area.
  • According to the 2011 census, 3% of the total population lives in Maharashtra, and the state is highly urbanized, with 45.2% living in urban areas.
  • Maharashtra has 35 districts, which are divided into six revenue divisions, namely Aurangabad, Amravati, Konkan, Pune, Nashik and Nagpur.
  • Maharashtra has five Madhya Pradesh based on geographical, political, historical and cultural sentiments.

  • Note: Maharashtra has a long tradition of having statutory bodies for planning at the district level.
  • There are 33 Zilla Parishads, 351 Panchayat Samitis and 27,906 Gram Panchayats for effective local government.
  • Urban areas are controlled by 26 Municipal Corporations, 219 Municipal Councils, 7 Nagar Panchayats and 7 Cantonment Boards.
