Defence Current Affairs: Mitra Shakti VI
The Indian Army and Sri Lankan Army have kicked off the 6th edition of Mitra Shakti Exercise on 27 March 2019 at Diyatalawa parade ground, Badulla district in Sri Lanka.
The 14-day exercise will primarily focus on training and equipping forces while carrying out joint counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations in urban and rural settings.
The Indian Army has sent its Bihar Regiment for this exercise with Sri Lanka’s 1st Gamunu Watch Battalion.
The purpose of the exercise is to build and promote close relationships between armies of both countries and to enhance the ability of the joint exercise commander to take command of both nations ' military contingents.
The previous edition of Mitra Shakti was kicked off at Aundh Military Station, Pune which was also focussed on counterterrorism operation.
The Indian Army contingent is led by Col. Parthasarathy Roy, Commanding Officer, 1st Battalion of Bihar Regiment.
Brigadier HPNK Jayapathirana, Sri Lankan Army's General Officer Commanding 21 Division, was the chief guest at the opening ceremony on Wednesday.
Why is Mitra Shakti Important?
Sri Lanka has always been on the front line of India’s foreign policy after the Modi govt. Came into power.
Strengthening relation with the country will help increase its influence over the Indian Ocean region and reduce China’s dominance.
Key Highlights:
- The exercise will help build skills in addressing transnational terrorism, conducting joint tactical operations, and building fighting skills.
- It will strengthen shared values and building friendship and camaraderie bonds.
- In addition to events based on infantry, there will also be the participation of artillery personnel, engineers, signals, the medical army and special forces.
