India-Canada Relations

Long-standing bilateral ties exist between Canada and India based on common values of democracy, pluralism, and solid and interpersonal relations. A developing network of official dialogues, agreements, memorandums of understanding, and working groups strengthens the profound cultural and political ties between India-Canada Relations.

The two countries' relations were strained in December 2020 after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke out against the farmers' protests in India. It was seen as interfering with India's domestic affairs. On December 4, the Indian foreign ministry summoned Nadir Patel, the Canadian high commissioner, to India.

Political India-Canada Relations

India and Canada have similar parliamentary structures and procedures as Westminster-style democracies. Mr Raj Saini, a member of the House of Commons, was named Chair of the Canada-India Parliamentary Association following the general election in October 2019.

  1. India is Canada's ninth-largest export market and its tenth-largest trading partner.
  2. In recent years, trade between India and Canada has increased by 62 per cent, making India one of Canada's fastest-growing export markets.
  3. In Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, and New Delhi, Canada has opened Trade Offices. Bombardier, SNC Lavalin, CAE, Inc., and other well-known Canadian corporations have a substantial presence in India.

About 400 Canadian companies have their offices or business operations in India, and around 1000 companies are actively entering the Indian market for business prospects.

Educational India-Canada Relations

  1. With 2,03,000 Indian students studying in Canada, India has recently surpassed China as the leading source of international students.
  2. In February 2018, the MoU on Higher Education (2010) between Canada and the United States was extended. This Memorandum of Understanding focuses on increasing collaboration in student and faculty mobility.
  3. As of 2020, 69 renowned Canadian faculty members have visited India for teaching assignments in Indian institutions as part of the Global Initiative of Academic Works (GIAN) programme.
  4. The Scheme for Promotion of Academic and Research Collaboration (SPARC), an initiative to improve research ecosystems in India's higher education institutions, includes Canada as one of the 28 nations covered.

Science and Technology India-Canada Relations

  1. The main focus of Indo-Canadian science and technology collaboration has been on encouraging industrial R&D with application potentials, such as the development of new IP, processes, prototypes, or products.
  2. A programme for knowledge exchange and scientific research on Cold Climate (Arctic) Studies has been launched by the Department of Earth Science and Polar Canada.
  3. In 2012, a five-year MoU on Cooperation in Information and Communication Technology and Electronics (ICTE) was signed.
