The FAME India Scheme (Faster Use and Manufacture of (Hybrid and) Electric Cars) is an incentive programme designed to encourage the adoption and manufacture of electric and hybrid vehicles in India.

FAME India Scheme's goal is to promote electric mobility by providing financial incentives for increasing electric vehicle production and developing electric transportation infrastructure.

FAME India Scheme Stages

The Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises introduced FAME in 2015 to encourage the manufacturing and promotion of environmentally friendly vehicles, such as electric and hybrid automobiles.

The Scheme is divided into two stages -

Phase I: of the project began in 2015 and ended on March 31st, 2019.

Phase II: began on April 1st, 2019 and ends on March 31st, 2022.

FAME India Scheme Objectives

FAME's main goal is to produce the use of electric vehicles by giving financial incentives. The government planned to spend Rs 14000 crore under the NEMMP scheme on infrastructure and promoting the usage of electric vehicles.

This programme incentivizes electric vehicle manufacturers and allied businesses to produce more electric vehicles in the country and the Fame India Scheme aims to shift 30% of overall transportation to electric vehicles by 2030.

FAME India Scheme Features of Phase 1

The first phase was implemented by focusing on four important areas by the responsible authorities.

During Phase I, the government installed 427 charging stations.

Phase I operations would be funded with 895 crores from the government. A total of 359 crores was spent to support roughly 2.8 lakh electric automobiles.

FAME India Scheme Features of Phase 2

The second phase of the Fame India Scheme focuses on public transit electrification and shared transportation. This phase is supported by a budget of 10,000 crores.

Electric two-wheelers: Each of the 10-lakh registered electric two-wheelers would receive a 20,000 incentive.

Four-wheeled electric vehicles: 35,000 electric four-wheelers with an ex-factory price of 15 lakh will receive a 1.5 lakh incentive apiece.

Hybrid Four-Wheels: Under this initiative, the government will grant an incentive of between 13,000 and 20,000 rupees to hybrid four-wheelers with an ex-factory price of 15 lakh rupees.

E-rickshaws: 50,000 incentives are available for each of the 5-lakh e-rickshaws.

e-buses: A total of over 8000 e-buses with a maximum ex-factory price of 2 crores would receive a 50-lakh incentive.
