Recently, President Ram Nath Kovind presented the prestigious Padma Awards 2020 & 2021 in various disciplines to deserving individuals from all walks of life (art, sports, social work, science, etc.). The list of winners for the two years was released on 26th January, but the awards were presented on 8th November 2021. About Padma Awards

In the year 1954, the Indian government established two civilian awards: the three-tiered Padma Awards and the Bharat Ratna. The Padma Award is one of the nation's most prestigious civilian honours, bestowed upon individuals who excel in their respective fields. The President of India bestows the Padma awards at a traditional function held at Rashtrapati Bhawan on Republic Day each year.

The Padma Awards were divided into three categories: Pahela Varg, Dusra Varg, & Tisra Varg. Through a Presidential Notification issued on 8th January 1955, these were successively retitled as Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, & Padma Shri.

The Awards

·         The awardees receive a medallion as well as a Sanad signed by India's President.

·         The recipient is also given a small replica of the medallion, which they can wear at ceremonial and State functions, among other things.

·         The names of Padma awardees are published in the Indian Gazette.

·         The total number of awards given in a year should not exceed 120 (excluding posthumous awards and those given to foreigners, NRIs, and OCIs).

Padma Award's History

·         The Govt. of India established the Padma Awards in the year 1954.

·         It is given out every year on Republic Day.

·         The award is not a title, and it can't be used as a suffix or prefix to the recipient's name.

Who Decides Padma Awards Winners

·         The Padma Awards are given based on the recommendations of the Padma Awards Committee, which is appointed by the Prime Minister on an annual basis.

·         The Cabinet Secretary oversees the Award Committee, which is made up of the Secretary to the President, the Home Secretary, and 4 to 6 distinguished individuals.

·         The award committee's proposal is presented to the President of India as well as the Prime Minister for approval.

Who Are All Eligible For The Padma Award?

·         These awards are available to all individuals regardless of race, profession, gender, or position.

·         Foreigners can also be awarded the Bharat Ratna and the Padma Shri.

The Padma Awards seeks to distinguish the works of excellence and is given for & extraordinary achievements in all the fields of

·         Literature& Education: Journalism, Poetry, Book writing, Teaching, Education Reforms, Literature, the upliftment of education and literacy

·         Medicine: Medical research, Homeopathy, Ayurveda, specialization in Allopathy, Naturopathy, Siddha, etc.

·         Public Affairs: Law, Public Life, Politics etc.

·         Science & Engineering: Nuclear Science, Space Engineering, Information Technology, Research & Development in Science & its associated subjects, etc.

·         Social work: Social service, Charitable service, contribution to public projects, etc.

·         Sports: Adventure, Mountaineering, Athletics, promotion of sports, Yoga & other Popular Sports.

·         Trade & Industry: Economic Activities, Banking, Business, Management, Promotion of Tourism etc.

·         Other fields not enclosed above and may comprise guarding Human Rights, propagation of Indian Culture, Wild Life protection, and conservation, etc.

Periodicity

·         Padma awards recommendations invite are held every year between 1st May & 15th September.

·         In most cases, the award is not bestowed after death. However, in exceptional cases, the government may consider bestowing an award posthumously.

·         The higher category of Padma award can be conferred only after 5 years have passed since the earlier Padma award was conferred. However, in exceptional cases, the Award Committee may exercise moderation.

·         Due to a change in govt., no Padma awards were given in the year’s 1978, 1979, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, and 1997.

 

Padma Awards 2020 Winners

The President has authorised the presentation of 141 Padma Awards in 2020, including four duo cases (in a duo case, the award is counted as one). The list includes seven Padma Vibhushans, sixteen Padma Bhushans, and 118 Padma Shri Awards. Thirty-three of the awardees are women, and the list also includes 18 foreigners/NRI/OCI/PIO as well as 12 posthumous awardees.
