Over the last couple of years, the English section of the competitive exams has given good surprises. You must have encountered one or more new types of questions in almost every exam you appear for. Many of these questions exclusively check your vocabulary skills. So, apart from enhancing your reading, writing, and speaking skills, a sound grip on vocabulary helps you score better in examinations. 

 

 

Reading is one of the best ways to boost your vocabulary. As you read a piece of writing, you come across new words that you might not have come across before. So, we must always try to inculcate a habit of reading.

Keeping this vision in mind, we bring to you the series, ‘Improve your Vocabulary from Newspaper Wordlist’. The articles in this series fulfill your daily intake of English words.

The series tries to feature words from an article, with their meanings, contextual usage, pronunciation, synonyms, antonyms, proper use in sentences, etc.

1. Word: Proctor (निरीक्षक)

  • Pronunciation: prok-ter/ प्राक्टर
  • Part of Speech
  • Meaning:
    a. a person appointed to keep watch over students at examinations.
    b. an official charged with various duties, especially with the maintenance of good order.
    c. to supervise or monitor.
  • Synonyms: monitor, invigilate, supervisor
  • Usage in a sentence: The exam was shifted to a proctored home exam after the court orders. 

2. Word: Facet (पक्ष)

  • Pronunciation: fas-it/फैसट
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning:
    a. one side of something many-sided, especially of a cut gem.
    b. a particular aspect or feature of something.
  • Synonyms: quality, aspect, side
  • Antonym: entirety
  • Usage in a sentence: The report examines every facet of the prison system.

3. Word: Detectable (पता लगाने योग्य)

  • Pronunciation: dih-tekt-ey-buhl/ डिटेक्टबल
  • Part of Speech: Adjective
  • Meaning: able to be discovered or identified.
  • Synonyms: discernible, perceptible, noticeable
  • Antonyms: unrelatable, invisible
  • Usage in a sentence: There has been no detectable change in the patient's condition.

4. Word: Contestation (प्रतिवाद)

  • Pronunciation: kon-te-stey-shuhn/कान्टेस्टेशन
  • Part of Speech
  • Meaning:
    a. the act of contesting; controversy; dispute
    b. an assertion contended for
  • Synonyms: argument, controversy, disputation
  • Antonyms: acquiesce, peace, harmony
  • Usage in a sentence: There is still considerable contestation over various mining projects.

5. Word: Hamlet (छोटा गांव)

  • Pronunciation: ham-lit/हैम्लिट
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning:
    a. a small village
    b. British. a village without a church of its own, belonging to the parish of another village or town
  • Synonyms: village, town, settlement
  • Usage in a sentence: A brittle wind gusted through the trees that surrounded the small hamlet.

6. Word: Render (प्रस्तुत करना)

  • Pronunciation: ren-der/ रेन्डर
  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning:
    provide or give (a service, help, etc.).
    b. cause to be or become; make.
  • Synonyms: make, give, provide
  • Antonyms: beg, take
  • Usage in a sentence: She needed him to hear her out and render.

7. Word: Vulnerable (अतिसंवेदनशील)

  • Pronunciation: vuhl-ner-uh-buh l/वल्नरबल
  • Part of Speech: Adjective 
  • Meaning: 

        a. (of a person) in need of special care, support, or protection because of age, disability, or risk of abuse or neglect.

        b. exposed to the possibility of being attacked or harmed, either physically or emotionally.

  • Synonyms: unprotected, insecure
  • Antonyms: secure, guarded
  • Use in Sentence: Old people are particularly vulnerable members of our society.

8. Word: Din (शोर)

  • Pronunciation: din/डिन
  • Meaning:
    a.a loud, unpleasant, and prolonged noise (Noun) 
    b. make a loud, unpleasant, and prolonged noise, make (someone) learn or remember an idea by constant repetition (Verb)
  • Synonyms:  uproar, commotion, cacophony, babel, hubbub, tumult, instil
  • Antonyms: silence, quiet
  • Usage in a sentence: They made so much din that I couldn't hear you.

9. Word: Mayhem (हलचल)

  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning: violent or extreme disorder; chaos.
  • Pronunciationmey-hem/ मैहेम
  • Synonyms: chaos, disorder, commotion
  • Antonyms: calm, harmony, discipline
  • Use in a Sentence: There was complete mayhem after the explosion.

10. Word: Invoke (आह्वान)

  • Pronunciation: in-vohk/ इन्वोक
  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning: cite or appeal to (someone or something) as an authority for an action or in support of an argument.
  • Synonyms: call forth, appeal, evoke, summon
  • Antonyms: dismiss, avert, avoid, abandon, banish
  • Usage in a sentence: The UN threatened to invoke economic sanctions if the talks were broken off.
