Over the last couple of years, the English section of the competitive exams has given good surprises. You must have encountered one or more new types of questions in almost every exam you appear for. Many of these questions exclusively check your vocabulary skills. So, apart from enhancing your reading, writing, and speaking skills, a sound grip on vocabulary helps you score better in examinations. 

 

 

Reading is one of the best ways to boost your vocabulary. As you read a piece of writing, you come across new words that you might not have come across before. So, we must always try to inculcate a habit of reading.

Keeping this vision in mind, we bring to you the series, ‘Improve your Vocabulary from Newspaper Wordlist’. The articles in this series fulfill your daily intake of English words.

The series tries to feature words from an article, with their meanings, contextual usage, pronunciation, synonyms, antonyms, proper use in sentences, etc.

1. Word: Scepticism (संदेहवाद)

  • Pronunciation: skep-tuh-siz-um
  • Parts of speech: Noun
  • Meaning: doubt as to the truth of something.
  • Synonyms: doubt, doubtfulness, lack of conviction.

3. Word: Plummet (तेज़ी से गिरना)

    a. fall or drop straight down at high speed. (Verb)
    b. a steep and rapid fall or drop. (Noun)
  • Synonyms: plunge, fall, drop, descend

4.  Word: Rebuff (अस्वीकार)

    a. an abrupt or ungracious rejection of an offer, request, or friendly gesture. [Noun]
    b. reject (someone or something) in an abrupt or ungracious manner. [Verb]

  • Usage in a sentence: She suffered a rebuff from her manager when she raised the matter.

6. Word: Doctrine (सिद्धांत)

  • Synonyms: philosophy, belief, creed, tenet

  • Meaning:

8. Word: Scurrility (दुर्वचन)

    a. the quality of being scurrilous (making or spreading scandalous claims)
  • Synonyms: billingsgate, obscenity, obloquy, abuse

9. Word: Appal (स्तंभित कर देना)

  • Meaning: 
    a. cancel or postpone the punishment of (someone, especially someone condemned to death). [Verb]
    b. a cancellation or postponement of a punishment. [Noun]

  • Usage in a sentence: The family has won a temporary reprieve from eviction.
